johnm Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 hey guys, i am considering buying an hds 7 or 8 with the structure scan. i already have an hds 5 and from my understanding can link the two. is it worth the money $2k or so for what you can use or learn from the graph. pros have fished and done well for years without it. what are the major advantages to improving the electronics to the next level... is it worth it? thanks john
Bill Babler Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 John, just sold my 09 Champion to Ed. Franko from Lake of the Ozarks purchased it and immediatly upgraded the electronics with side and down scan and two new HD7's and linked them. Also have to have a central antenna for the link to work. I will tell you now, you will not come close to 2 grand. Better think well over 3 by the time all is said and done with the 7's. If you go to the HD8 you are looking at 5 grand Plus. Here is Ed's number, give him a call. I know he is playing with it everyday. 573-692-6710 Just put in a call to the lowrance guy about linking the 5 to a 7 or an 8 and YES you can. All you would need it the cable. Probably would want to go with the central antenna however. If you keep your 5 and do not upgrade to two units, you can do it for under the 2 G. figure you were thinking. If you decide you want to do it, email me and I can probably offer some pricing and installation thoughts. I would for sure speak to Ed and see how he is liking his. I know for fishing Lake O. It would be fantastic to look under all those docks, and I think he is. Good Luck http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Members Darron Cooper Posted October 3, 2011 Members Posted October 3, 2011 Just bought 2 HDS 7's in the spring. Havent used them much. I need to go out with a guide and learn how to use them. I spent close to 3 grand for both units and the downscan which is mounted off the back of the boat. Definitely better than the basic units I had on my 05 basscat cougar that came stock. I am still playing with them and I havent fished much since june. getting ready to crank it up this coming weekend. I bought mine from bass pro and they were really helpful however their service dept couldnt get them installed quick enough. I had Fred at Ulrich marine install everything. He can sell them as well for the same price as BPS. I know if I ever have any problems he can get me in quick and fix it. Im not sure I can say the same for BPS. Hopefully, by next spring I will be able to use them effectively. DArron
