I've fished them pretty consistently over the years. Depth can be important, especially if they are bedding and the best way I know get a slow level retrieve for gills is to carry 3 different weights and distinguish them by using different colors of tying thread as an indicator. Gills aren't picky and the head color isn't likely to make a difference to them.

I'm not one to stick hard to patterns when i think it isn't necessary. Bluegills have always seemed to be suckers for any bulky wet fly that has noticeable yellow or red on it. That is why I left the original McGinty and started tying a sparse hackle instead of wings. I don't know that I ever used hen hackle or partridge, but I would today probably , especially the partridge.

They also seem to like any small dark topwater that has legs.

I didn't read all of this, but it looks as if he has some variants.

McGinty

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Any wing or hackle...or just peacock and a bead?

Just peacock herl, a bright yellow marabou tail, and a bead. I wouldn't use such a thing for trout fishing, I just don't think it would work, but bluegill love it for some reason; I've yet to find a fly that consistently works better.

This topic caught my interest. I looked up the McGinty fly online and tied up a version on a small (1/100th) jig head. I didn't have any red hackle so I used some red crystal flash (8 strands) for a tail. Peacock herl for a body. Yellow floss tied on in the middle of the body over the herl. Added a Yellow Marabou wing. The bluegill and bass, in my neighborhood pond, loved it. I caught this big bruiser on it. He was bigger than the largest bass that I caught on this fly.

I think you got the wrong picture. Nice hybrid, though.

Right picture, however, you are correct on the hybrid. I didn't take pictures of the others.
