dennis boatman Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I fish a 6wt rod, and I have problems breaking off with 8X tippet when using dry flies...Yea I know, it's hard not to set the hook to hard, but is that my problem or would a lighter rod work better for dry flies...happened twice the other day on 8" browns... A strike indicator is just a bobber...
Gavin Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 8x is a bit light..Heck, I rarely see a need to drop below 4-5x most of the time and a 6wt is no handicap with that stuff...For 6x & 7x and tiny flies...I'll usually go with a 3 or 4wt with a soft tip. Good luck.

Dude, yes- 6wt+8x = break offs. If I am using 8x... well I never use 8x- its the worst. I rarely use less that 4x with my 6wt. Get a 4wt or a 3wt- my 3 is my favorite rod- especially for 8 inch browns- and it'll protect 8x better. http://flyinthesouth.com/
Arofishing Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 In my limited experience I'd hate that combination. Moreover I'd hate to use anything smaller than 6x. I have enough problems with it on my 5wt!
Trout Commander Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I would say it is a combination of the two, Dennis. If I can fit it through the hook eye I fish 4x flouro. If I have to I drop down to 5x. Even using 4 and 5x I still catch wild wary fish from streams x, y and z consistently. A 6wt isn't well suited for protecting tippet and if you have a stiffer faster action rod that only compounds problems. The softer the rod, the more it protects the tippet. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
3wt Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Yeah, I think 8x is too light. I use 6x regularly, almost exclusively and don't have much trouble with small dries.
Members Zeke Kuehn Posted November 4, 2011 Members Posted November 4, 2011 Yep, rods to heavy and your tippets to light. With an 6wt I would try not to fish less than 7x. Good luck, make some adjustments and you'll be landing them in no time! "Fish Long and prosper"- John Geirach
