Feathers and Fins Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 How simple does it get a Jig head with hair tied to it or feathers or Mylar even yarn! You can have more fun making them and trying different material and seeing what works. Oh and dont forget road kill deer lol jk of not. Size: 1oz to 4oz Colors: Day, White, White with Red, White with Blue, White with Green. Night, Black, Black and Purple, Red and Purple, Purple and Glow Head White. When to use them? When stripers are in shallow water 15ft and less on flats, cast them out and slow swim them back to you near the bottom occasionally gently lifting your rod tip up and down. When stripers are surface feeding, Cast them right to the fish and reel them as fast as you can. Trolling them, this is when I will add a swim tail to them and troll them 100yrds behind the boat using different head sizes for depth control. Jigging, Depending on current or drift speed I use from a 1oz on a no wind no drift boat to a 4oz on a good wind or drift. They key is short snaps of the rod tip no more than 18 inches and position it 2ft above where you mark them on your sonar. I suggest setting sensitivity high so you can see the bait in relation to the fish. Stripers will feed up. Now if they are on the bottom pop it on the bottom 6 inch snaps like a wounded fish and they will go down to get it. I really suggest buying the Jig-heads and make your own it’s a lot of fun and you can experiment with colors Never know when you will come across a color for the lake you are on that is a hot producer. Also Bass and Flat-heads like them so don’t be surprised to get one of them. Finally Use a shock leader. When I use the 3 and 4oz size I always tie on a 2ft section of 50lbs shock leader. The repeated casting and a big fish can be tough on line not to mention the take on a cast and retrieve could easily break you off. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
junkman Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 "When stripers are surface feeding, Cast them right to the fish and reel them as fast as you can." That sounds very familiar to fishing in Florida LOL. We would watch till we could see the school coming and everybody would get ready. Then everyone would cast and yes reel as fast as you could. wild to see 7 or 8 fish chasing your lure as you reel like a madman. was pure de fun. Thanks for all your expert advice.
Feathers and Fins Posted November 11, 2011 Author Posted November 11, 2011 Sounds like you were chasing one of my favorite fish, the FAMED HOUR JACK!!!! Lord i miss getting in a school of a couple thousand 40lb'ers and watching the attacks. Cobia did the same thing great fun untill you hang into the Bat they were with, say bye bye at a speed that would have made Captain Kirk jelous. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Members Bass Ivy Posted January 22, 2012 Members Posted January 22, 2012 Wich one would be a better choice. Would you say the Horsehead with the spinner blade. Like a big giant Roadrunner or just the bucktail jigs wiht no spinner. I already make my own bass jigs. The ones I make myself are better than anything Ive ever been able to buy. The ones I make I can sometimes fish for two days and not hang them up and lose them. If I had a lure retreiver I probablly wouldnt lose them hardly at all. Anyway I love using roadrunners on whites. And sometimes I do good on kentuckies and large mouth with them. Ive been bass fishing with guys before who think they are pretty good, and they think they have to use the most expensive lures they can buy, and I pull out a Road Runner and spank them. LOL You are right about the colors. In clearer water in the daytime the best color is white with a red head for whites I would assume it would be similar for stripers just use a bigger bait. BUt if the water is somewhat stained trying for whites a chartruese with a red head is a killer. If the wind and waves is slamming into the shoreline and there is a mudline or stain line that is when the chartreuse comes out of the box. The red head does make a difference too for some reason. Ive also caught kentuckies, and blacks using the same methods. Ive caught crappie like that too, but crappies seem to like the chartruese without the red head. Ive got along way to go on the striper fishing. Right now Im pathetic. ive made up my mind Im going to figure out these stripers. I would like to make my own jigs for them. I would think the Horseheads with the spinner would be the better choice, but I want your opinion on it before I buy me a mold. I could just start making my own roadrunners too I guess. And thanks for the tips. Im really one of these people who truly loves fishing. I can be out there all day and never get a bite and I still love it. Ive wanted to get into the striper scene for many years, but I have just never really tried until last year. I went once with a guide several years ago and never caught a striper. And Ive only went about 5 times in the last couple years and all those times the water has been below 45 degrees. But Ive done just as good on my own as I did when I went with the striper guide and it costed me a whole lot less. LOL! This info that you are putting on this forum I truly appreciate. Thanks again!
Feathers and Fins Posted January 23, 2012 Author Posted January 23, 2012 Just a Bucktail no spinner or rattler, if you add anything just put on a swimbait tail to add to its profile. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
