laker67 Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 I had the priviledge of fishing the opener today with my good friend Jeff Tiffeneur, "Jeff Tief" on the website. The water was in good shape and the weather was great. Lots of fish in the creek with a couple handfuls of lunkers. We were fortunate to catch a couple of lunkers apiece. Late in the day we found two nice browns, but they took us to school and sent us home talking to ourselves. Thanks to MDC and the parks for sponsoring our winter trout season. This is my 36th year for the winter trout season opening weekend, and I have spent many of those at Montauk.
Jeff Tief Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Would 2nd the comments from Laker 67;always good to get out on a great Missouri November day with an excellent sportsman and friend;Saw a couple old friends from the old Lead Belt area too!bring your a-game when fishing with LAKER.
3wt Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 How were the crowds? I've noticed that openning C&R weekend can be pretty packed when the weather's nice. I love C&R season, but one of the main points is the small crowds, so I try to avoid weekend #1.

Usually the friday crowd, in recent years, is almost as heavy as the saturday crowd. All I can figure is that the deer season opener may have kept a few away. There is a lot of fish in the creek, so give us a report when you go and good luck to you 3wt.

I was fishing the area above the dam in the afternoon, and counted 15 anglers all in that area about 2:30 P.M. I also saw about 6 anglers in the area in the campground. The Spring Branch also had about 10 folks fishing it. I noticed that there was a few less trout above the dam than their was last year. Even with that in place the fishing was great. I had about 40 fish on hook during the afternoon, and lost 5 good flies due to weak knots and nice fish. The wind was off and on and so was the bite. When the wend blew through the bite was sub surface on a scud, then between gust the crackle back on surface took some fish. The river is still very low and clear, but the leaves are not as bad on the stream. I noticed the fish was not as line shy I was able to use 5X tippet on many fish. The top fly I had was the Olive Chubby Scud. Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.
