Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted September 4, 2006 Root Admin Posted September 4, 2006 Fishing was pretty good this weekend... must have released alot of rainbows for the holiday. I heard Saturday almost everyone caught their limit- at least those cleaning fish on our dock. Today was alittle tougher... not sure why. I push night crawlers for those who bait fish and there's a reason why. They work! I took Jeff Wenzel and his 2 sons Joseph and Ben out this afternoon and we fished air injected worms just above the Short Creek gravel bar. I anchor close to the bar and over on the shallow side kinda as a shelter so we won't get run over... it works most of the time. Had a pontoon go behind us and I told him and warned him there was shallow water past the stump. He said he didn't want to interfere with our fishing- nice gesture but he hit the bar anyway. Oh well. Anyhow we caught fish from the time we got out there (4:45 pm) till we headed in at 6:30. They were running one unit- perfect- little Ben hooked and fought a nice rainbow for awhile and lost it at the boat. It was at least 24 inches- 7 pounds. I was surprised- that area gets hit as hard as the Fall Creek line. He like worms, not power bait! But power bait caught fish too. I'm sure.
Kansas Fly Fisher Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 My wife and I fished for about 3 hours on Saturday as well. We stayed up in the fly zone and fished below outlet #2 and ahead of the riffles going to the rebar hole. Fishing was tough but we caught a few. I used the primrose and pearl midge I got from the fly swap and caught three right off the bat. Then they turned off. Caught another nice rainbow, about 18", just after they started generating with a black woolhead leech. Other than that it was pretty slow. We headed North for Monday. See the report for Bennett Spring to see how another fly from the swap worked out. BTW - great fly that primrose and pearl. I'll have to stop by on my next trip down to get the supplies to tie them.
