My 7 year old grandson had never been trout fishing before. He likes to catch gills and does well, but he sure has been wanting to go with Pop to try some trout. I haven't started teaching him the long rod yet, so he and I experimented with a fly under a bubble on his ultralight spinning rig. He was not successful so we are going to have to work on our methods or consider switching to jigs. I will have to get some instruction myself fishing microjigs and such in order to help him out...but he did help me net a few. Here is his first handheld Taney rainbow at Rocking Chair.

The horn finally blew for one generator so we decided to go down by outlet 2. Here he was more interested in redirecting the flow... :D

I now have a fishing buddy and can't wait to begin what I hope is a lifelong pursuit for him.

Glad to see another generation at the the stream! I'm sure you'll have alot of stories to tell. My granddaughter has been fishing with me since she was 4. She caught her first trout at Roaring River when she was five; on her Barbie pole no less. I can't wait to start working with the long pole. She's still a bit too impatient to try and teach but I'm hoping maybe next year. Take care Dano.

P.S. Tell jOrOb to check out my post about Bennett. His Disco Bugger was the thing to have on Monday.

Sounds like an excellent Labor Day trip and the first of many for you and your grandson.

Man that is excellent!

There is nothing better than that big grin.

John, I saw the Bennett post. That is cool!! I would be interested in knowing if anyone is using different colors, and which ones are working.

It sounds like a great trip Dano. My grandkids always raze me because they catch all the fish and I usually catch zero because I’m retrieving all the hang ups and retying on flys. Most times, I just leave my rod in the truck. I know my most memorable fishing trips have been with my Dad or father-in-law down through the years. The enjoyment had nothing to do with where we were, or the fish caught, but it was who I was with that day.

Hey Dano,

Looks like he has a great teacher indeed! - what a fine way to spend labor day! Although in that second pic it looks like you are teaching him to fish with a club - I think that is illegal - but wait... you said you were at outlet nuber 2? - Oh then I guess it's probably OK, I see ALL kinds of methods being used there. :D

Rock on -

That is great, I can't wait till the newest addition to my family will be able to join me and G-pa on one of our fly-fishing adventures. This trip will never be a one that you will not forget, both of you ended up having a great time. Let us know how his next adventure goes!
