I picked up a new 5ft Orvis access but Didn't know what a good reel would be to match with this rod. I don't really want to spend 300+ for a reel. I was also wondering If I lose my warranty Card and need to get a rod repair How does orvis know if you were the originally owner or not.I Know TFO don't care just send them the rod and money, but i was told orvis only will repair it if you are the orginally owner and if u buy it on eBay ect they wont stand behind it so was wondering if anyone could actually clear it up and tell me how they know you are the originally owner and it wasn't purchased on eBay. Thanks!

I'm assuming you meant a 5wt Access and for everything you will do with a 5wt the drag will mostly be a moot point. With that being said I would mount a couple of different reels on the rod and see what weight range will balance well with it and go from there. The access rods aren't super lightweight so there will be a ton of reels that fall into an "acceptable" weight range to balance it out. Anything from a click and pawl to a Galvan will get the job done. You can spend as much or as little as you want on to get the brand and or aesthetic appeal you are after.

The purpose of the warranty card is to fill it out and send it to the manufacturer. That way they "know you are the original purchaser" and it is registered to you as such.

Hope this helps.

I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted.

Orvis stands behind their rods, they have a pretty good idea of the time frame that the rod is made by the way they switch models each year or so.

The Battenkill Bar Stock in size III would be a good fit, nice little reel for the price.

You can get away with click and pawl drag reels, but I wouldn't want to. While a nice drag isn't a necessity for a 5wt for trout it is awfully nice to have when you learn how to use it.

Look into the lamson konic, ross cla, ross worldwide line (cast reels, but so is the konic), or even the cabelas rls. I'd try to stick in the $100-$150 range.

I'd invest in something that will last and will satisfy you as long as the rod does. I have an old SA system that I wish I had not bought. It's heavy , loud noisy, get's bent out of shape and won't turn, and the spring pawl drag sucks. I could have been $60 or $70 closer to a reel that I didn't hate if I hadn't settled for that thing.

go to mrfc.com and click on the clearance specials link on the home page, several reels for sale there. the best bargain in my opinion is the scientific anglers system 2L reels (page 7 on the clearance specials). unlike the s.a. reel described above, the 2L series are well made and have a nice drag. on the smaller side in my opinion, so i use the 6/7 size on my 5 wt. and it balances fine. plus, it's on sale for $70. nice reel and a steal at that price.

Loomis has a nice reel for around $ 100 and it has a wonderful quiet drag unlike the Orvis that goes click click all the way home. I have one on my9 ft. 5 wgt orvis trident 7.5 mid flex and love it. I can't remember the name of the model but BPS carries them and they are a nice goldtone color. Balances reel (sp) nice on the Orvis rod.
