Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted December 30, 2011 Root Admin Posted December 30, 2011 Wanted to take the kids fishing, crappie fishing. My son is here from the Boston area and Megan and Greg live here. So we four, the son-in-law, Jimmy, and my nephew Levi headed to Aunt's Creek Access this afternoon. Slid both G-3's in the water about 1:30 pm and headed out and up the James. Hit 3 of the docks me and Babler caught our crappie on a few weeks ago- nothing. One dock though had a big ball of shad-thing going. It was pretty cool and the kids got a big kick out of it. We hit 3 more docks- nothing. Fish a little bluff/structure- nothing. Watched 2 pair of eagles buzzing around the bluffs which was cool. Thought that might have been the highlight of the afternoon. Headed back to the ramp and decided to stop at a dock very close to the ramp for one last try. 50 feet of water and found them 10-15 feet deep. Fished with 1/16th oz white or pink or chartreuse jigs (all 3 colors caught fish). They wanted the jig dead still and it took them 3-10 minutes to take it. We caught 10 nice slabs in about 40 minutes and called it. Good thing we came home with something... we were planning a fish fry, which is usually the death of a fishing trip.
vacation Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Awesome report...I tried three docks near the dam area last Saturday and only managed 1 fish on a 1/32 white jig, dead still when it hit.
Members Whistle Pig Posted December 30, 2011 Members Posted December 30, 2011 Went today and nothing, not even one keeper...we had been doing pretty good. Does anyone have any experience with the TR crappie and their patterns through winter? I thought maybe the fish had traveled up stream to take advantage of warmer water (45 @ Bridgeport - 48 just below Asher's). Appreciate any replies, and good fishing.
Members hogbob Posted December 30, 2011 Members Posted December 30, 2011 I went to Flatcreek this morning, ended up with 8 keepers. The wind made it hard to fish. Water temp was 42/43, my pattern this time of year is stay in the channel and drag a jig a couple feet off the bottom, the trick is to use a heavy jig, 1/4 on the bottom and 1/8 24 inches obove the bottom one. go slooooowwww, keep the line as vertical as possible. On nice days like today, you'll have lots of company.

We fought an ol trot liner that kept thinking we were cutting his lines......crazy ol man....i'm to lazy to run my own lines, better yet his. The wind was so bad that it was hard to feel what was going on. We were fishing MDC brushpiles. Holding lots of fish but seriously couldn't feel our bait. At the end of the day, and burying the hatchet with Catfish Charlie, we had a great day and ended up going home laughin at the ol man.
