Members TheTugistheDrug Posted January 3, 2012 Members Posted January 3, 2012 Looking to purchase a 6 wt and see where Orvis has their Hydros on sale for $295. http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=1A92&dir_id=758&group_id=759&cat_id=19159&subcat_id=21555 If there is another option out there that you recommend for less money or what your thoughts are on the Orvis Hydros please let me know. Thanks!
Al Agnew Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 I honestly don't know anybody that fishes Orvis rods, but I think that's a very good price, and I would suspect the Hydros are worth that much if not more. If there was an Orvis store somewhere close where you could actually cast one, and then cast some other rods, that would be perfect. I basically won't buy a rod anymore until I can cast it and some others to compare it to. While most reputable rod companies produce good rods, I think there is often a lot of difference in the "feel" of rods from various companies. For instance, my favorite rod out of all I own is a St. Croix Legend Ultra...and I own Sages, Loomises, and a Winston (although the Winston is their cheapest grade!) But for $295, while you probably can't go too far wrong with the Orvis, there are certainly other rods in that price range which are just as good and might possibly fit you better.
Justin Spencer Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 I'm with Al, if you can you need to cast and compare. My favorite rod is also the St. Croix Legend Ultra and when I bought it the Hargrove guys brought me down a bunch of different rods to try and I was able to cast and fish them and something about it just felt right. Because of casting styles and abilities (of which I am limited) different rods will feel better for some and worse for others. Just because Al and I love the St. Croix doesn't mean it will fit your casting style. If you can, try them out and spend a few more bucks buying from someone that will give you some personal service. After all the savings won't amount to half a tank of gas usually. I have mostly been fishing the Redington CPX (9 foot 6 wt.) lately which I really like as well. If that is the wt. you are looking for come fish it for the day and if you like it I'll send it home with you for substantially less than you could buy that Orvis rod. Members TheTugistheDrug Posted January 12, 2012 Author Members Posted January 12, 2012 Thanks for the feedback. Didn't know a "test drive" was that much of an option, makes sense though.
Greasy B Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 I say test drive or don’t buy. These days most high end rods are probably pretty comparable. Back when I bought my first couple of quality fly rods the Orvis rods were way soft, bending well into the handle. Now that I’ve been casting the newer faster rods I can’t stand the old soft rods.
