mic Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 I'm tying my first parachute fly (an adams). After you wrap the hackle to the post, do you tie down the hackle to the post or to the body? Also, do you start the wrap at the top and work down or go up and back down? Thanks In Advance, MIC
mic Posted January 4, 2012 Author Posted January 4, 2012 Follow up question... what are the best sizes for small creeks and what are the best for rivers?

I have seen it tied down both ways. You should probably try both ways to see which one you prefer. When wrapping the hackle, I work from the top to the bottom. The size of the fly really depends on the size of the bug that is hatching and not necessarily the river or creek size. Good luck! Luke Walz
mic Posted January 4, 2012 Author Posted January 4, 2012 Thanks...another question. As I'm finishing the fly I catching the hackle during the tie down of the hackle and fishing the fly. It leaves my fly a little thinner in front of the post versus the back of the post. Is that an issue that I need to work on? Any tips? Thanks In Advance, MIC

That answer isn't acceptable. If I'm not matching a hatch but using it as a searching fly, any recommendations on size?

The fly can't be to big but not to small. Still not acceptable? All kidding aside, I would probably go with a size 12 or 14 Luke Walz
Buzz Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 http://www.flyanglersonline.com/ I hope this helps. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
dgames Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Tie down to the post gives a much cleaner looking fly.
dgames Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I would probably tie in a 14 as a searching pattern. I used to be really bad at tying parachutes when I tried to tie of the hackle and finish the fly on the hook shaft. There was a flytying show on PBS I think a couple of years ago and saw them tying off the hackle on the post and whip finishing to the post as well. My parachutes turn out much better with this method. It is really hard to finish off on the shaft without tying down a bunch of the hackle in the process.
