Members Fishin4Fun Posted September 8, 2006 Members Posted September 8, 2006 Hello All, My family and I moved here about 2 years ago from Idaho. I just recently found this forum and think it is a great resource. I have not been trout fishing since I moved out here, but sure want to get back into it. I have 2 boys who are 8 and 10 and I want to start taking them trout fishing. Eventually I would like to teach them to fly fish, which is what I have done for years out in Idaho. My questions for anybody who can help, is where is a good place on Taneycomo to take my boys and get them fishing? We live up in Ozark and I would like to start taking them down there this fall. We do not have a boat, so we would need good shore access. Also, I am clueless on a lot of the spots that are talked about here in the forum so I need some good advice and what to use (flies and lures). The only area I am somewhat familiar with down there is the fish hatchery below the dam. We have visited there numerous times, but that is about all I know about Taneycomo. If anybody can help a poor Idaho boy get his feet wet here in Missouri, I would greatly appreciate the help. I have let 2 years pass without taking my boys fishing for trout and that has got to stop. Thanks for your help on this one. Make it a Great Day! twosets Posted September 8, 2006 Posted September 8, 2006 Hey 4Fun If you want to fish from shore with kids, the best place to go are the outlets by the hatchery when the dam is NOT making water. This is artificial lures only, also no soft plastic baits. Slot size limit less than 12" or over 20", so kind of catch and release. If you wanted to spend a few bucks and have a better chance to catch fish with the kids, I would rent a boat ( I am not sure if Phil rents them to non-unit renters, but Lillys would be a good place to start) and go up to short creek with some worms. The people at Lilly's are great and can always give good advice on where to go and what to use, but at this time of the year a worm is always a good choice, you never know when you will catch a big brown. This form is an excellent source of current fishing information. Good Luck PS There are good maps on this form "This is not Nam. This is bowling. There are rules."
jOrOb Posted September 8, 2006 Posted September 8, 2006 There is a great resource for kids in AR called Dry Run Creek. It is a pretty good drive from you, but it is fantastic fishing. Dry Run is a small feeder creek that runs from the Norfork National Fish Hatchery to the Norfork River. It is under 16 with an adult or handicapped fishing only. No adult fishing, but you can assist your kids. Single barbless hooks, and artificials only. No power bait or scented baits of course. The fishing on Dry Run is awesome every day and your boys will have an absolute blast. Plus, there are a number of BIG fish in there. jOrOb "The Lord has blessed us all today... I think those boys can hook a few fish there... and you also have the MDC fishing dock close by there... Give me a shout a few day in advance when you guys decide to come down again... I can find you a few spots for those boys to fish... Leonard... (417)-779-8061 http://www.taneycomonights.com

Members Fishin4Fun Posted October 19, 2006 Author Members Posted October 19, 2006 Hello Everyone, I am thinking of bringing my two boys down this Saturday to do some shore fishing and wanted to know where would be the best place to go? Neither of them know how to fly fish, so I think bait might be our best bet. Leonard, you had mentioned around Lillys Landing would be a great place to go. Where would you suggest? My brother-in-law and I rented a boat at Lillys Landing last week and fished all day, but didn't have much luck. I did see a lot of people fishing from the docks, but I know that is for registered guests. Are there places for the public to fish? Any suggestions on where and what to use would be greatly appreciate. Make it a Great Day! Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted October 20, 2006 Root Admin Posted October 20, 2006 You can fish off our dock- just check/register in the office first.
Members Fishin4Fun Posted October 20, 2006 Author Members Posted October 20, 2006 Thanks Phil, we will probably be down there some time in the morning with my boys. What is the best kind of rig (line, weight, bait, etc...) to use off of the docks there? I was also wondering how beginner friendly the upper area would be if I wanted to take them up there and use lures? Will it be really crowded and hard to teach them up at the outlets? They are 8 and 10 years old and have fished for a while now, but I don't know how they would do in a crowd. I hope to get them fly fishing one day in the near future, but this trip is just to get them out and start learning some new areas. I grew up fly fishing in Idaho and would love to pass the joy of fly fishing on to my boys. Any suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Make it a Great Day! Snow Fly Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Fishin4Fun: You might not remember but we talked a little while I was waiting on my fishing buddy at Lilley's dock. Another great yearly get together at Lilley's made up of family and close friends. We have been meeting down there for like 10/15 years. I wanted to mention you might take a look at the Trout parks during the winter C&R season that starts Feb.10 Fri.-Mon. 800am - 400pm. to teach your boys a little about Fly Fishing. There are usually some mild days during the season that will allow for a great day on the water without much discomfort from cold weather. You live close to 3 of the parks. 1. Bennett Springs, Lebanon Mo. 2. Montauk at Licking Mo. and 3. Roaring River, do not remember the name of the town only there once. Except for the opening weekend you can usually find plenty of water to fish, teach and have fun on with your son's. "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"
