jeb Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Seems the Pea Ridge Civil War park is clearing trees to make the battle field more like it was during the Civil War. So they're taking the cedars they clear and putting them in Beaver as cover. They did this last winter, too. Anyway, they were down at the lake doing that today. The trees are around the area about half way down the Prairie Creek cove, where the old road used to go into the water. I hear they are also planting them somewhere around the Ventris area. I assume near the ramp between big and small ventris coves, but I've never graphed around the area enough to find. Fishing has been very sporadic. I've caught them on spoons, A-rigs, jerk baits, jigs and deep crankbaits. But not catching a lot on any one thing. Just a weird winter so far this year. Hard to pattern. Members Bass Ivy Posted January 22, 2012 Members Posted January 22, 2012 Im getting me a Lowrance HDS-7 Gen2 with Structure Scan I will be sniffin out them brush piles. I think this little piece of equipment will help. I cant wait. Ive been fishing lately, but Ive been trying to catch stripers and Im not very good at it. I havent been Bass fishin in awhile, but I always like using jigs this time of year. When the water temp gets like this I just love a jig. Are they making a massive pile of cedar trees? I live right by the Military park. And they have plenty of cedars that is for sure.
jeb Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 They spread them out a little last year. Not sure exactly how they placed them this year. Will have to check it out with my Side Imaging next time I'm out. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha
J-Doc Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I think it is "uber" cool that they are making a productive use out of these trees. Most people would just haul them off or burn them. Throwing them into the lake is great for the fish and great for us anglers! Way to go and Kudos to the Pea Ridge Military Park for being creative and caring. jeb Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 I agree. Nice to see them making good use of them, no doubt. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha
Members Bass Ivy Posted January 22, 2012 Members Posted January 22, 2012 I guess back in the Civil War times there were no Cedar Trees in the Park area. My ancestors Homesteaded the land that I live on now. And I live right off the North side of the Military Park. My Grandpa just passed away recently he was 92. He told me several times that his dad told him that You could drive a wagon all over that Military Park. Most of it was big hardwood timber and it was really open in around the timber. It was just scattered big Hardwoods. Ive heard stories it got that way from the Indians burning it off frequently for 100's of years. Now the park is mostly a thick tangle of brush and cedars on alot of it. It really needs the ceadars removed, and they are doing a very cool thing putting them in the lake. If they clear all the cedars they need to there will be thousands of them. Personally I think they should revert back to the burning that the indians did. over time it would make the park look like it did in the Civil War days. they olnly need to burn after they remove the cedars and put them in the lake though. I launched at Monte Ne the other day and when I was coming out there was a guy who rolled up with a christmas tree on top his car he came over to me and asked if I wanted that tree to put in the lake. I told him that I was headed in for the day. I told him that if he would just throw it out by the ramp someone would pick it up and put it out somewhere. So I guess that is what he did. Ill bet it didnt lay there very long.
Members Bass Ivy Posted January 24, 2012 Members Posted January 24, 2012 The last time I posted on here two days ago on this thread I said I wish they would start burning the Military Park off every year. That is the weirdest thing because they burned a big chunk of it off yesterday and last night. The smoke was so thick around the house here last night off the North side of the Military park. They must have gotten a bunch of cedars out before they burnded. Wich is good to get good use out of them for fish habitat instead of just burning them.
Quillback Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 I would like to see them start some deer hunts on that park, can't drive by there early in the AM without seeing deer hanging around the road. They need to be thinned out also.
BFTMASTER Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 I have never caught a fish off a submerged deer. J/K
Stump bumper Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 They should be putting those trees on the points they have marked on the map as fish attractors. They have signs posted on a few sites and I have noticed they have let those sites thin out a little, especially the one across from the RT12 launch it used to be a really nice brush pile a few years ago but it it hard to find the brush now. They were using man made type attractors but found people would move them in low water so they went back to using stumps and ceader trees and I know the FLW donates to the cause each year they are here so I am surprised they haven't replenished them better.
