Forsythian Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 It's getting really old to have every topic turn into an eco crusade. LAME X3 Cenosillicaphobiac
Al Agnew Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 "Eco-crusade"? C'mon, with the problems all our Ozark streams are facing, it's NEVER a bad thing to discuss possible problems. There are regulations in place to basically do "best practices" on building new septic systems. It's the old ones that are the biggest problems. But the other real problem is that there is a basic lack of inspectors when it comes to enforcing the regulations. I wish that more people thought about the river rather than their own wants. In the case of this land, it looks like the cabin site would not be visible from the river. I have a problem with people wanting to build where their cabin or trophy home sticks out like a sore thumb from the river, but I have no big problem with building an unobtrusive house or cabin within walking distance of the river. I wish that there could be scenic easements along all the rivers where you can't build right on the riverbank or atop a bluff where anybody can see it. I'm as guilty as anybody on this issue, though. Our house on the Yellowstone is within sight of the river. Of course, there are also about six other houses that you can see at the same time you can see our house, and we didn't build it, we just bought it. If you want to see what rampant development can do to viewscapes, just float the Yellowstone through much of Paradise Valley, where you're almost never out of sight of somebody's trophy home. At least most of them look kinda upscale, since the price they had to pay for the land precludes somebody buying it and sticking a used single wide on it.
Justin Spencer Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 This spot will be visible from the river, but like on the Yellowstone there are other "cabins" right next door that are also visible. At least on the NFOW there are pockets of cabins and then miles of very few or no cabins at all. We put in a septic system down here a few years ago and I was impressed with our health department guy who came out and inspected the installation. Lots of paperwork and soil testing had to be done to determine drainage and length of leach lines as well as minimum tank size, kind of a pain in the butt, but glad someone is watching. I think the assumption is that you can simply build anything you want wherever you want and do it in any way you want. Get too close to the river and DNR steps in and that makes things even more fun. A while back ROLF sent plans for approval to DNR for a landing on the river....they changed those plans how they saw fit and basically said "Take it or leave it." So there is a lot more going on behind the scenes than anyone that isn't building or doing anything around the river knows. My Youtube Channel

What drives me nuts is how they get in your business about something like that landing, which they can really mess up and make useless. And then if you want to cut down all the trees right up to the river they don't get concerned. The building of that landing is going to have very little impact, while if you cut down all the trees on a big turn in the river (like happened in the riffle above otter rock) it could lead to bad erosion and a change in river course. bigredbirdfan Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 "Eco-crusade"? C'mon, with the problems all our Ozark streams are facing, it's NEVER a bad thing to discuss possible problems. Unbeknownst to Outside Bend and Tim Smith and others many of us do care about water quality and other conservation issues. I guess awards should be handed out to those who post the most and bore us to death with theories, data, personal opinions and policies. Most of the time I post anything it is bacause these eco crusaders seem to dog pile and bully any opinions to the contrary. These same "eco crusaders" seem to turn every post or topic into a "grand stand" on environmental issues with a smattering of personal jabs and insults and quit frankly it's old and lame. That's my view and others on this thread seem to agree.

That's what gets me on a lot of controversial issues...people tend to overlook the bad behavior on their side while getting very sensitive to the same behavoir on the other side.

bigredbirdfan Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Seems to me that there's often "dog-piling and bullying" on both sides when things go south. I find it disturbing because there really can't be any civil discourse on what probably are important issues. The snuffing out of anything contrary is rampant on most issues. But alas. I'm happy to report to you that I'm in the process of making some Agnew mods to my solo canoe for the spring including the battery box tacklebox that I'm most excited about. I tend to bring more water in the boat than most so keeping it out of the water will be very nice and one less thing to bungee in. Thanks for posting the pics and the idea.
