Members FullTiltAngler Posted March 5, 2012 Members Posted March 5, 2012 Started fishing some docks around the 8mm about 7 in the morning. The crappie bite was extremely slow off the start. After spending about 30 minutes or more and only two crappie to show(both were under 9") decided to go around the docks and throw a rogue around to see if any bass might be found. After about an hour and half had hooked 7 nice largemouth all running 1-3 pounds(returned all to the water). I was using a 5" black/chrome rouge and throwing either from out on the dock back toward the bank or running along the bank throwing somewhat out/parallel to shore. Got three from the inside corners of two docks and then rest from I estimate approx 20-30ft from the bank. Once the bass bite quit went back to try for the crappie but after over two hours ended with only 7 keeps 9-11 inches. Oh well! It is still early in the year and with the bass taking up the slack from the little guys made it a very good day.
Members just fishin Posted March 9, 2012 Members Posted March 9, 2012 Been crappie fishing several times since Christmas and doing very well. Fish a lot at LOZ and know a lot of bedded docks and that's the key. Went 3/3/12 and caught two limits of pretty nice fish and several small fish. Work was called off 3/7/12 for my wife and a buddy of mine that fishes with me a lot so they went and another two limit day for them. She did save them for me to fillet when I got home.
Members FullTiltAngler Posted March 10, 2012 Author Members Posted March 10, 2012 What part of the lake are you all fishing? I'm still hearing that the crappie bite is slow lake wide. I figured due to the bass moving in for their spawn as well as the lake temps and levels still low that it would most likely be a few weeks before the little guys will start showing up shallow for their spawn. Just curious where you all are finding these limits and what are you using, how deep and what time of day?

Like "Just Fishin" reported, catching them on bedded docks. Find some crappie in that kind of cover, and you will catch them there for the next month or so.
laker67 Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 With little to no wind this morning, I took the fly rod to the crappie dock. I fished a 1/100th oz maribo jig with no indicator. I caught 8 keepers in 8 to 10 foot of water fishing beside the brush. The fish were agressive and wanted the jig on the move. Saw carp and spoonbill on the surface this morning. A good sign that the fish are increasing their activity.
Members HomerSharp Posted March 11, 2012 Members Posted March 11, 2012 Fished the Little Niangua today after noon for about 2 hours and caught 30 crappie from 10 up inches on a 2 inch silver flack shad grub. Mostly all females and they where around docks near wind blown points. Alot of fun.
laker67 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Caught 17 keepers on the fly rod today. A good bite in 8 to 10 feet. The fish were aggressive once again. 5 mile marker of the big niangua.
Bill Jr. Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 this is a little late but thought that I would chime in. I fished Friday afternoon, Saturday 11:00 - 4:00 and a little on Sunday morning. Me and a couple buddies were fishing from a dock on the 8mm in Workmans Cove. We caught around 100 and fileted 60 for an upcoming guys "work weekend" and a few to bring home. We caught them on jigs until they slowed down and then used minnows. I caught most on a pumpkin seed/pearl chartruse slab slayer on a 1/16oz sicklehead jig head and I normallydo fairly well there. We fished 6-9foot in 11-15fow. preferred the deep shade. I would think that they will go shallow very soon. good look and have fun!
