Members trytofish Posted March 7, 2012 Members Posted March 7, 2012 coming to trl in a couple of weeks for annual crappie/ white bass father son trip. stay on the upper kings, hickory hollow. have heard about walleye up there but have never caught one in 12 yrs. where are they and what to catch them with. i need all your deep gaurded secrets please!
dtrs5kprs Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Try the advanced search for "walleye", author RPS, forum TR. Think most of us view him as the resident walleye guy, he sticks some nice eyes and posts some good detail about what he does. Most of the ones I've ever caught at TR were accidental, carolina rigs/grubs on flats (inside bends), sticks and cranks shallow- and up in the end of the lake you mention. Have also encountered a few around HWY 13 in the same kinds of places, same baits while looking for brownies. On a lake full of brown and green fish I can usually find something besides big perch to chase (that should be enough to get the walleye guys to answer in more detail, or just start a scrum-we have been pretty tame since the A-rig debate tapered a bit).
powerdive Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Target bass. They're easy to catch, need thinning, and taste wonderful. Sorry, trytofish, but I've never fished the Kings. In two weeks some of the eyes will be far upriver and some will be filtering back downstream post-spawn. Suggest that you try rigging crawlers at 10-20 feet on inside bends and secondary points in the upper half (lake portion) of the river.
rangerman Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Uhhhhhhh, without fresh water water coming down the river Aka;rain, it likely wont be a very good run. In fact I believe the Kings river fish may have already moved back down. There were some eyes up there last week....Things could change with a good rainfall though.

Thank you for the compliment. This year, the walleye seem to be doing a stealth spawn. Some are done. Some are staging. I think the majority are with the white bass who have not yet moved up. Powerdive's post has much merit, although I would add lindy rigging to the set of tools and I would not be afraid of water skinnier than 10 feet.

rps Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 I did a post last year in June with pictures. Lindy rigging is a form of Carolina rig fishing but you use a small float/attractor in frnt of the hook you use to nose hook a live crawler. I have found it very effective when the walleye are less than 25 feet deep anf holding in areas like the downstream side of inside bend points. I fish them by using my troll motor to move the drag weight over the bottom at .3/.4 mph.

The ones around Kimberling have me curious, if only because they tend to claim the occasional FB jig or C-rig from me. Couple of years ago they were actually pretty bad about it in April/May.

I had a magic July last year. One at 10+ on a trolled crankbait and one almost 14 on a crawler harness. Of course, I paid for my sins with shoulder surgery in October. I am finally able to reach over my head again, but the rebuilt shoulder is very weak. I am planning to open my 2012 campaign in a few days during Spring break. I know better than to expect a repeat of last year, but I am optimistic.
