Quillback Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I didn't watch the game, who wants to watch a 2 seed beat up a 15 seed?
ozark trout fisher Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 A tough day for sure...But important not to lose perspective. Before this season even started, it looked like it was over. Haith was rapidly losing his team. Lawrence Bowers got injured, and it looked like Phil Pressey was going to transfer. All the signs were pointing toward a complete fiasco of a season. And here we are at the end of the season, having gone 30-5, beating Notre Dame, Cal, Illinois, Baylor, and (most importantly) Kansas along the way. We won our second Big 12 Title ever, and there honestly couldn't be a more classy, upstanding college basketball team out there. It was a hell of a ride, and the results of this game don't change that one bit. But I wish it didn't have to end so soon. I feel really bad for the seniors having to go out this way, but I hope they (and Frank Haith) know that we appreciate what they've done anyway. One bad night couldn't change that. Meanwhile, to look ahead, we've got Phil Pressey, one of the best point guards in the country (who was one player who played very well to tonight), Michael Dixon, and Lawrence Bowers returning. With some of the transfers we've got, and (more importantly) Bowers, we should be a very competitive team...And we should have a little more size. Maybe we won't win 30 games, but we'll have every chance to be a solid tournament team. I'm looking forward to it already.
stlfisher Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Most dissapoiniting loss in school history. Duke just lost too
Al Agnew Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Yeah, it was a very disappointing loss. It just happened to be the perfect storm against the Tigers...coming out flat, English really off on his shooting (and slow...gotta wonder how much the quad bruise slowed him), running into possibly the only team with that low of a seed who had the height and athleticism to give them trouble, AND having that team shoot way better than their history would suggest. The whole team just looked slow, and played slow. This just didn't look like the Missouri team we saw all year (except that it looked a WHOLE lot like the game at Oklahoma State). It was pointed out a lot that Mizzou's defense always allowed the other team to shoot a high percentage, especially threes. The thing always was that Mizzou could match or beat any other team in scoring, while getting enough turnovers and disruptive defensive stands, because of their quickness, to overcome the defensive lapses. Today, they just didn't look quick and they didn't do much of anything defensively. I can't figure it out. But it seems like they should have come out in the second half with a lot more urgency and played more up tempo. If anybody would have told me last fall that they'd win 30 games in the regular season, I'd have been ecstatic. Heck, I wasn't even sure they'd make the tournament after Bowers got hurt. This was the most enjoyable year I've ever had in all the years I've followed Mizzou. It just hurts to have it end like this, and I really feel bad for the guys on the team, especially the seniors. SLU played a good game, though.
Justin Spencer Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 Hopefully Haith will concentrate a little more on defense next year. I thought this team was vulnerable if it had a poor shooting night (which it didn't yesterday and still lost). In the tourney you need good defense so you can pull off an ugly win as you won't always shoot over 50%. In the tourney you need good defense so you can pull off an ugly win as you won't always shoot over 50%. I do agree with that. I thought Haith did an excellent job this year, but the one thing that was always making me pull my hair out was our defensive struggles. Every single game that we lost this year, the main reason was that we just had a complete defensive breakdown. A lot of the time it didn't matter, because we were able to swamp most teams early with hot shooting and transition points. But once we get into close games against teams that aren't turning the ball over, you really have to get some stops at the right time to win. And that just didn't happen last night. Look at South Florida...By far the worst offensive team to earn an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament, maybe ever. And yet with their incredibly stifling defense, they've easily won their first two games of the tournament to get to the Round of 32, and against a couple of very good opponents (Cal and Temple). They shot 11% in the first half of their game last night and still won by 14, because their defense just makes it unnecessary for them to score a lot of points. It's just a little more evidence that strong defensive teams tend to go deeper into the tournament that elite offensive teams. We learned that the hard way.
dave potts Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I thought Al summed it up well. All in all, a great year with an exciting team to watch. Who would have guessed they would finish the regular season ranked #3 in the nation. I remember my years at Mizzou in the mid sixties when you could get a ticket to a game at the last minute for a dollar and the place was darned near empty. You would also darn near freeze to death in old Brewer Field House. Dave

Dave This was a great year for Mizzou, but the main difference between KU and MU fans is that a few years of going out in the first round and KU fans are calling for a coaches head (Roy Williams had several times where the fans wanted him gone), many times Mizzou fans are just happy to have had a good year regardless of tournament success. You must demand excellence or you will always just be a "nice" team with good years from time to time. Patience is good to an extent, and Mizzou will never have the program Kansas has, but there is no reason we shouldn't expect to. I'm disappointed and mad that the seniors couldn't come through this year, good learning experience I suppose (for whatever that's worth) but the best chance they will have at a championship in a while I'm afraid.
