rps Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Over the winter, while I was banged up, Hoglaw (Kyle) wrapped two rods for which I had bought parts but could not finish. One was a 7' crankbait rod on a St. Crois blank. The other was a 7'2" jig rod on a Lamiglass Excel blank. He spiral wrapped both using the micro guides I had ordered. I fished with both today and managed to catch the first fish on each. The crankbait fish was a solid keeper on a wart. The jig fish was an almost keeper. Both rods cast much farther than you would expect - I was on the bank more than once - and both performed well with fish on. Thanks again Kyle. I am sure I would have caught more if I had been able to fish more efficiently. Unfortunately the wind was to the point I needed a guide to drive the troll motor full time while I fished. Trying to do both was a challenge. On a side note, I spent the first three hours above Beaver fishing a Lindy rig for walleye. I caught several bluegill, but the only walleye I brought in was the size of a large cigar.
motoman Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Glad to see you post rps......I was actually about to send you a message......I haven't seen any posts from you about a particular 'topwater' bite lately.:-).......those are always a great read!:-)
hoglaw Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Randy: I'm thrilled you are pleased with the rods. You have no idea how nervous I was handing over materials someone else had paid money for. I, of course, had to do some testing with both rods and I was very pleased with them both, so I was more than willing to pay you your cost in them for both. They would make good additions to anyone's arsenal, including mine. I'd done quite a few rods before yours, but never for anyone else so it's great to hear they are working out well. I've done a number of projects for myself over the winter, and I think I just about have a rod for every possible lure and line now! I still need a good heavy A-rig rod and a frog rod. For most folks those would be the same rod, but once you get bitten as hard as I have with this building bug, you've got to have the perfect setup for each. Thanks for the vote of confidence, and I hope they serve you well for a long time!
rps Posted March 20, 2012 Author Posted March 20, 2012 I fished a bit again today before the faux front came through. I cught another wart keeper and two dinks. I doubt I will ever want an A rig rod, but, then. I wiil never be in Buster's shoes.
