Members Ruckus Posted April 7, 2012 Members Posted April 7, 2012 Hey guys I'm new to the Springfield area and have only been to Springfield Lake. I really haven't had much luck there and was hoping Fellows would offer better fishing. I know its a bigger lake and I have a 10 ft bass hunter(the plastic 2 seater boat). Would I be ok on the water with that small of a boat? I'm from the KC area and have never come across smallmouth but I have heard they are a blast to catch. I have a lot of experience with largemouth but if you have any tips for hooking a smallie I would appreciate it
Members fisherman wannabe Posted April 8, 2012 Members Posted April 8, 2012 You will have to buy a $35.00 boat permit to put your boat on fellows. You pay that at the marina and they put a sticker on your boat. The wind can make the lake pretty rough when it is coming out of the south. I have never heard of anyone catching a smallmouth on Fellows but maybe that was not your question.
Members Ruckus Posted April 8, 2012 Author Members Posted April 8, 2012 I was on fishingnotes.com and from their info I gathered Fellows had smallmouth. Thanks for the info, could save me some frustration later!
Members evnrude18 Posted April 8, 2012 Members Posted April 8, 2012 I have fished for bass on Fellows for 5 years now, and never have caught a smallmouth. Not saying they are not there, just know I have caught plenty largemouth and never a smallie. : P
RSBreth Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 If Smallies are the goal you'd do better waiting until a little warmer water and hitting the James, rent a canoe and float dowstream from Hootentown. I say this from also fishing Fellows off and on for years and catching very few Smallmouth.
Members Ruckus Posted April 8, 2012 Author Members Posted April 8, 2012 Great thanks for the info. I have also heard they are in the James River and Finley but where can you go to fish either of these rivers?
Members Bill Y. Posted April 8, 2012 Members Posted April 8, 2012 Hi, Fellows lake used to have smallmouth back in the '70s but are all gone now thanks to overharvesting... They have largemouth and some white bass but no smallmouth bass in Fellows Lake.
Wayne SW/MO Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 You could put in TR, Indian Point area wouldn't be too bad for your little boat. Another area would upper Bull Shoals below Powersite dam. BS has a good population of smallies. You're only about 50 miles from either area. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Members Muskie Bob Posted April 9, 2012 Members Posted April 9, 2012 Although I don't fish Stockton lake, I talked to a guy last week who told me he had a blast catching smallmouth bass on Stockton lake the week before. I've heard others mention Stockton lake had lots of smallmouths. I would be throwing some of the same lures I throw for large mouth bass. Right now, I'd be twitching a Smithwick Rogue along some of the steeper rocky shorelines mostly inside coves. The rogue should be good for smallmouths, largemouths, and walleyes (something else Stockton is well known for). Just twitch, twitch, pause, etc.......lots of fun in the prespawn time.
Feathers and Fins Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Ruckus, Fishingnotes is one of the wourse sites on the net for information. I read it on occasion for a laugh but for true information its a joke. Glad you found this one as the members here will help point you to the truth and get you on fish. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
