took the fly rod out today to chase some smallies. we had a pretty good wind blowing all day and this coupled with my still amateurish casting led to what might have been a frustrating day for some....luckily i am used to sucking at stuff and called it a day of practice. The water on Spenser Creek looked as good as i had seen it in a while and when i wandered around the bend away from the road i could almost pretend i was in the Ozarks for a bit. To be real honest i didn't need to as this creek ( a tributary of Salt River ) is one of my favorite places to fish around home. Yes, the fish tend to run small, and yes its pretty low in the summer (all the riffles i will post as pics will be a thin strip of water by June) and sometimes you need to occasionally walk a little farther downstream to avoid the people swimming and drinking at the low water crossing. But over the last few years this creek has been my home on the water and personal fly fishing school. And it has the things that are most important to me, fish and solitude (for the most part)

But back to the fishing. I caught one...on a Clousers...he was small and had a weird little wound on his side that i didnt notice till i was looking at the post if anyone has guesses on what that is i would like to hear them. The fishing was tough but it was the middle of the day and i cant cast as far as i have gotten used to with my ultra light and Rooster tails so i wasn't expecting to do great..

the moral of this little grammatically incorrect tale? go outside it is that wonderful time of year.post-11758-0-16318300-1334022084_thumb.jpost-11758-0-52870700-1334022104_thumb.jpost-11758-0-50651800-1334022140_thumb.jpost-11758-0-31649600-1334022189_thumb.j

Fish always lose by being "got in and dressed." It is best to weigh them while they are in the water. The only really large one I ever caught got away with my leader when I first struck him. He weighed ten pounds.

Looks like the kind of creek we all like.

Clousers can be tough to cast if the line and rod aren't right.

its a cabellas prestige 5 wt i was fishing a short 6 lb leader. the line i have now is a floating line...it came on the reel when i bought it ...truth be told im still pretty new to the fly fishing and am basically self taught at this point, so i tend to assume user error when things do work

I'm sure the line is a WF which requires a lot of line to be out to cast properly. You might consider a bass or warmwater taper line. Cabelas has them at a reasonable price. What it would do is put more line weight out front which would make turning over clousers and bugs much easier. If you ran a 6 weight in one of those tapers you could improve your short cast considerably because you would have more weight to load the rod without having a lot of line out..
