npierceuark Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Coming from Fayetteville this weekend to float the Elk and really looking forward to it. I have rented canoes in the past but I finally purchased my own this year. I was wondering if there were any good suggestions on floats with public access and take out. The elk doesn't seem to have many but I'm sure some of you know the river much better than I. One last thing, anyone been catching fish? Caught some nice smallies down here this weekend and saw some on beds so it's about that time, thanks guys, Nick
OKFlyFisher44 Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Get with Russ or Jean Ann at Hog Haven to set u up with a shuttle. U can access the river at Pineville, a couple spots along HWY H, and at Mt. Shira. Mt. Shira is just up the road from Noel, MO and HWY H runs out of Noel on it's way to Pineville. Lots of good water in those areas. Have fun! Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...

Members Mr_Scrogg Posted April 17, 2012 Members Posted April 17, 2012 That they are, I floated from Hog Heaven to Mt. Shira last Thursday. Caught and Released over 30 Smallies, and 1 4.5lb largemouth. Be careful on the last set of rapids before you get to Mt. Shira, I almost flipped my kayak.
npierceuark Posted April 17, 2012 Author Posted April 17, 2012 I'll probably shuttle vehicles with a buddy or two. Is deep ford public access to mt shira a good float for a day and a half? And Mr. Scrogg that report is awesome, I'm hoping to have half that kind of luck. Mind me asking what you were tossing?
Members Mr_Scrogg Posted April 18, 2012 Members Posted April 18, 2012 I was catching mostly everything on a Green Pumpkin Mizmo Tube 2.75" But I'm sure with how aggressive they were, that they would have hit anything. Did pick up a couple on a Pumkin Fat Albert Grub.
npierceuark Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 That's one of my preferred lures, very nice big mouth! Glad to see there are some fatties swimming around down there
