strangercreek Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 I was watching episodes leading up to the new episode last night. There was an episode called "pack of teeth" in which Jeremy Wade was looking for a killer fish in some river in Africa. He located and caught some type of tiger fish in packs and the footage showed a bunch of catches. He seemed to be switching gear around and there was a shot or two of him with a fly rod. I thought that was cool. I have seen him use big trolling reels and big spinning rigs, and occasionally a baitcaster, but that was the first time seeing fly fishing gear on that show. I thought it was worth mentioning
Bill B. Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 The Zambezi River, I think. I'd like to see a few schools of those tiger fish in Lake of the Ozarks. He told the same story about a dam on the Zambezi that he told last week about Bagnell Dam: A diver went down to clean the generator grates, got scared by the giant catfish and refused to go back. That has to be the oldest fish story in existence, but, both weeks, Jeremy told the story as if he'd never heard it before.
strangercreek Posted April 17, 2012 Author Posted April 17, 2012 Yeah, I caught that episode to, I have just now become glued to that show. The more exotic locations are more interesting to me. The alligator gar stuff was interesting though. I would love to take one of those on fly gear some day, or any rod and reel for that matter.
Wayne SW/MO Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 strangercreek I'll bet that fish in your avatar showed you some backing. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Jack Jones Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 My 3 yr old loves that show. We watched the River Monsters: Unhooked episode the other night when he fished for eels with a chunk of meet and fish wrapped in wool thread. The concept being that the eels teeth get caught in the wool and they can be reeled in and dragged ashore without having to use a hook. I think it had to do with regulations in New Zealand. Either way, the crazy guy put on a kevlar suit, slathered himself in fish guts, and waded into the river. darn eerie to see the eels congregate around him and then start nipping. I wouldn't do it. Glad we don't have those around here. Does anyone think that the wool bait would work on some of our toothier fish? Muskies, maybe? drew03cmc Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 I am fascinated by this show. The places he gets to fish astound me, but not so much as the variety of species he chases. Andy
strangercreek Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 strangercreek I'll bet that fish in your avatar showed you some backing. that was on my 5wt, it was a good fight, a memory for sure...went right to the start of the backing, but it was in a really marshy area (Squaw Creek NWR in NW MO). RIver Monsters is a good show, cool when something can draw a good audience with some actual content, instead of the "watching people who are famous for no reason" crap. I know alot of folks whose kids are really into it.....a good deal Jeremy Wade's facebook page (I think it is facebook) has had some info about when he was younger and described himself as an "obsessive carp fisherman".
Addicted to Creeks Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 I am fascinated by this show. The places he gets to fish astound me, but not so much as the variety of species he chases. i watch the last 20 minutes the first 40 is all hype Fish always lose by being "got in and dressed." It is best to weigh them while they are in the water. The only really large one I ever caught got away with my leader when I first struck him. He weighed ten pounds. —Charles Dudley Warner
strangercreek Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 i watch the last 20 minutes the first 40 is all hype I actually like the first half of the show when he is going into different areas, talking to locals, hearing the fish stories etc. That is part of what makes it interesting to me. It reminds of me of growing up, there was guy that traveled the world then came to our school and did a couple hour slide show and talked about the places he had been, it was cool
MoSportsmen Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 The wool mentioned. I have heard of using freyed nylon rope as a lure and hook for gar. The freyed rope just gets caught in the gars teeth. Messing about in boats
