I took my girlfriend to Pinnacle yesterday to walk a few holes. In the process I saw a bluegill spawn in full gear. Looked like moon craters everywhere. It got me to thinking about my favorite lake that has no shortage of monster smallmouth and largemouth, but they can be difficult to catch. Come to find out, I have a hall pass tomorrow night and it's a full moon....interesting.

I've never targeted bass during a night bluegill spawn, but I figure tomorrow is as good a time as any to start. The lake is very deep for the most part with hard sloping banks and little to no vegetation in the water, but I know where some bigger flat areas are without as much contour to them so that's probably a good place to start. Any advice for tactics and lures for this kind of night fishing? I planned on slow rolling a big black spinnerbait and slow-waking some magnum sized wake baits. If that doesn't work, I normally wind up worm fishing. But with the bluegill going to beds hard, surely there's a way to just fish that pattern and do well.

It sounds like you you'll be fishing at night so these may not be the best options, but this is what I fish when the bass are up shallow and taking advantage of the bluegill spawn...

- 3/8 or 1/2 oz. swim jig in a bluegill pattern with a Reaction Innovations Little Dipper or 3.5" Lake Fork Magic Shad in Watermelon for a trailer. I usually add some chartreuse to the tail of the trailer

- 4" Tru-Tungsten swimbait in the bluegill pattern. I use the slow/fast sink model as opposed to the waking/slow sink model.

- Have never used this, but would maybe give it a try as well. Warmouth from Big Bite Baits...

Good luck and let us know how you do!

Now owuld that lake be near say farmington lol.... Actually the full moon and amount of gills ive been seeing has my eyes firmly targeted on Beaver for Saturday night and the Walleye that will be chasing them and the shad like no tomorrow. It should be a banner Late afternoon and early evening.

If i were you I would be using Keitech 4'' swim baits on 1/4oz in White, Blugill and Sparkle Shad. Scale your line down to 10lb test and maybe even as light as 6lb.

Try the Lateral Perch this thing is awesome!!! The fact that it lays flat makes it perfect for that little flopping around Gill getting to ready to be wacked by some big on bass!!

biffle bugs on the biffle hardhead are bad to the bone for fisihng the bluegille spawn.

The body resembles a bream, it can be used as a swimjig or bottom bouncer.

extremely versatile.

you should have a black buzzbait tied on at all times,

also, prop baits like a crazy shad or devils horse will catch fish.

theres always a crankbait that will get bites at night
