Mill Creek Question

I normally fish the upper James between Aunts Creek and cape Fair, but I'm taking the family camping at Mill creek next week and wanted some advice on how to fish the lower end? Jigs deep? Is the crank and ww bite still on? Just trying to get a feel for how different it is,especially with the stained water I've been reading about. Thanks for the help!

Surely you read Bills recent report. That would be the first thing to try. Second, look up the MDC brushpile list and target those. There are a ton between Millcreek ramp and the swimming area. Our night tourneys let a lot of fish go in that area and im sure a bunch run down the bank, see the structure and hole up for awhile while they get their wits back together from the stress of being wieghted in. We call them pet fish.

The point on Mill Creek is one of my favorites and then we work down the west side of the Mill Creek area. I have not fished this area for a few years, but we used to catch some nice bass in the tree tops along this shore line. I think top water should be dynamite in the early morning. Watch for shad and surface feeding activity.

We try to key in on wind blown points near spawning coves after the top water bite fades. Smoke grubs and split shot centipedes are a couple of our favorites at this time of year. Something new and worth trying is the A Rig.

Line is very important in clear water and should not be overlooked. It will make the difference in my humble opinion. I would presume the water will be clear based on the weather forecast. There are alot of great spots in this area and within a few miles. Finding the right pattern, location, lure, and presentation is part of the challenge and fun. Keep monitoring the reports on this website and enjoy.

One last point, check out the boat docks on sunny days as sometimes this is a gathering point for bass. Years ago I remember a club tournament was won by a team on a 2 day club tournament with almost 40 pounds at this time of year fishing a boat dock near this area.

Plenty of good gravel around Mill to swim a grub on. Get out off the bank a couple of good casts and swim that grub all the way back to the boat. Experiment with swim vs. scrubbing. Drag a tube, FB jig, or C-rig same places. Out to maybe a max of 30' or so. Shad, wind, and brush will make it better.
