Fishin Hodge Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I have a couple of freinds that want me to take them light fishing sometime next week. Anybody having any luck, realize the moon has been nasty bright, but looking for some advice, as I know very little about it. What area of the lake should I be looking at? Any tips or reports are much appreciated. Thanks!
Stump bumper Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Are you looking to put out lights for crappie or night fishing for bass or ? There are a lot of people who fish under the route 12 bridge with lights in the hotter months, I have catfished under the lights in PC this time of year with some good sucess on channels and flatheads but we need a little more info. Then there are people who pull rattle traps after dark for stripers.
wc1063 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Last week, they were boats everywhere under the 12 bridge at night. I guess they were fishing for white that schooled there. That would be the place I go night fishing.
Fishin Hodge Posted May 9, 2012 Author Posted May 9, 2012 Looking to fish for Whites, Stripers, Walleyes, and Crappie. Thanks for the info. Anybody has any more info, recent sucess or failure, it is appreciated.
Feathers and Fins Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Stripers are scattered so it might be tough to target them right now. Whites and Hybrids are the Fishing For Dummies Book they are everyplace and easy to get. Cats I would go into PC or even Avoca and sit back and enjoy the evenings. Fishin Hodge Posted May 10, 2012 Author Posted May 10, 2012 The reason I am concerned is I have only done this twice. The first time was the new moon of April right down by the dam. Looking back that wasn't a good idea, in fact it was a horrible idea. It frosted hard and we caught 3 white bass. The other time was in June and we really didn't catch much that night either on Point 5. Looking to avoid another bust. Should you be able to tie up on nearly any bluff anywhere and catch some whites, or is there an area that is better, PC, Rocky Branch, Dam area. Thanks for the info on PC area and 12 bridge.
Stump bumper Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 One of my favorites is the cut by Horseshoe Bend where you have to come off plane to go between the rocks. The whites seem to like that area for some reason and lots of spots along the rocks also. The lights from the Horseshoe bend Marina draw in whites and crappie also. The flat just west of the RT12 bridge draw whites on a good moonlite night this time of year, I have gone out and caught 50 whites on full moons from shore when I couldn't sleep. There is no one spot they will be every night but move around and you should find them. I would say PC area is the easiest area to find them but the most boat traffic to put up with also. I like the sandy flats for whites at night more than bluffs, and now I say that I just remember the sand flat as you round Horseshoe bend some nights they are stacked up there.
chi0082 Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 Stump bumper, how deep is it there on the flats west of hwy 12 bridge? Would it be likely that if I put out a big brood minnow under a bobber and let it swim freely around as far as I could throw that a striper might hit it? Just wondering. I might go out this weekend & try just that.
Stump bumper Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 Right off the beach area it is pretty shallow but drops off better toward the rocks. I have gone there at dusk and thrown a jerk bait and caught stripers before. Also if you walk around toward the docs behind the apartments on the right there is a long point that drops on both sides and have hooked up with stripers there also. I was night fishing for cats there one night and bunch of drunk skinny dipping girls came running out of the apartments and dove into the lake.....didn't catch anything there that night. I have caught a lot more whites then anything but every once in a while you will see stripers working together in a wolf pack running shad up into the shallows. I would suggest throwing a cast net around the shore line and getting bait there, even the little bluegill seem to work better than brood minnows for me. Not a bad place to sit up a chair and enjoy a small fire but expect vists from Benton County and the game warden, I have had my license checked once on a boat on Beaver but everytime I have set in a chair on that beach.
