Members tmoney Posted May 20, 2012 Members Posted May 20, 2012 Two weeks ago I had a blast down here caught good numbers and nice size. I knew it had changed from everything I had read and heard...but boy did it change! I tried everything I knew to do, threw the kitchen sink at them today and I had very little to show for over 9 hrs of fishing. Threw the spook in the early hours, had 4 hits but no hook ups. Then moved to jig &pig of channel swings, D22 on windy points, big worms over brush piles, carlina rig off long pea gravel points...and still struggling. On the bright side I feel like I got some good sun(not really looking for it), got a pretty good calf work out(maning that trolling motor) leared how to jump a wake in the bass boat(didn't really mean too) and am a pro at riding a boat on a gallop(not sure that's a profession). I know summers here, but man! That was more boats than I've seen on the rock since the Bush adminstration. I could have thrown a dead cat in any direction and hit someone...looked like a parking lot. Back to fishing..got one more day and not sure what I should do...except try to dodge traffic and not hook some on back back cast.
rps Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 From what I hear and what I saw, the lake changed overnight. The big bass that hung under the Holiday Island docks on Friday were gone today. Friday I limited on walleye and had a good early topwater fish day. Today was stinko for me. I assume the guides did ok, but I bet they had to work harder.
jeb Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 I hate TR on the weekends in the summer. So much boat traffic! I complain about it here on Beaver too, but it's way worse on TR. Sorry to hear about your tough day. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha
jmes Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 youve got that KVD Tournament this weekend and the fish had a meeting and decided to take off this weekend LOL
Champ188 Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Used to be you could talk a few fish into riding around in the comfort of a nice aerated livewell for a few hours on the weekend, especially if you dumped in some of that "bass crack" medicine that makes the water turn blue. But hell, boat traffic has gotten so bad that they don't want to get beat up in the big wakes.
Tfsh4bass Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 You weren't alone...I struggled to get bites all weekend fishing the KVD thing and only managed 5 fish on Sunday after catching 11 on Saturday but nothing over 3. I fished a little different because I figured you needed a 4lb to get a check and I threw DD22, big mop jig and 6" swimbait but still I just couldn't get bites or even bumped much. Traffic Sat was brutal and my only complaint with the KVD is the one weigh in site thing
jolicious Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 I'll agree with the tough bite on the Rockthis weekend. Small fish were all I could find as well. 2.55 was the biggest one to visit my boat! After Saturday in the clear water, I did a complete change and took out of Crickett Creek Sunday morning - more of the same. That lake sure is pretty, though, so I'm not complaining!
Hunter91 Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 We struggled saturday up around Baxter so headed down toward the dam Sunday. Caught 30 + smallies on a jig no bigguns though. Biggest was just shy of 3 lbs but had probably 10-15 over 15 in. I could also do without the heavy pleasure boat traffic. Took one wave over the bow.
roy_eros Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Fished the lower end and as everyone already said lots of traffic and not to many bites to be had. Got a 4.61 in the boat on day one for a 2nd place check, had one other nice fish break me off on Sunday..only quality bites I had in two days.
Members tmoney Posted May 22, 2012 Author Members Posted May 22, 2012 I always seem to struggle with the summer patern on the rock. Sunday I started fishing a little deeper on points, channels swings and humps and did better. Caught a few north of 2 lbs but no giants. I tried the technique that the BASS boys used with the deep diving cranks with my jig. I would cast to one side of a hump, open my reel and troll to the other side then stop and slow retrieve it over the hump. This takes a lot of time but it works and allows me to cover a great deal of area.
