Fishing at Montauk was good this morning with a great trico hatch. Size 20-26 females were working fair, but for the last couple of days the egg patterns have been the bait of choice for catching fish. The John Deer jig drifted under a indicator has been taking some fish also. I fished a #18 black Caddis dry and caught two fish on it. The crackle back fished as a dry was not working very well but stripping it back just under the film was taking light hits. I expect the patterns to change this week with the heat wave that is headed our way.

I have had a few anglers say that they have caught fish on a black foam beetle #18. If I was going to try this pattern I would set a #18 Zebra Midge about 18" below the beetle. The fishing in the Blue Ribbon area this week has been very slow. There also the egg patterns have been the bait of choice. The area below Parkers Ford is not a good choice of river just now. This is because of the low water conditions right now. The flat water is just not holding fish and it's a pretty good hike between holes that are holding fish. This up coming week end is going to have canoes, tubes, & what ever a person can ride on going down this area of the river. But by no means the fishing at Montauk inside the park will be slow. Enjoy the week end!

I saw tricos below Tan Vat Sunday morning. What's with that.? I didn't figures they'd be out this early in the season.

The warmer weather and dry conditions with low water has all kinds of hatches going on. This morning the Caddis were everywhere. The Tricos have been hatching good in the mornings for the past two weeks.

Yea, I seen rising fish from dawn to when I left about noon. Most were sipping rather that chasing caddis. I managed one on a dry fly that was better than 18". I wonder if the big browns will migrate into the park earlier this year? In this part of the country large browns in a small stream environment is unheard of, at least I can't think of any other.

Looks like foam dries will debut earlier this year. I'm worried about the browns coming into the park and getting taken, again...

The browns are already on the way. About 4 have had the privilege of eating dough bait already. But the people in the know say there is not a problem with it!
