I'm finally taking my first fly fishing trip away from Missouri/Arkansas waters. I'll arrive at the San Juan on Monday 10/09/06. I know several of you have fished it before and any advice whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.....Don

Small, small, small.

Midges, midges, midges.

Gotta get up to the cable- get shoal up there full of trout. I actually did real well throwing JIGS in the heavy shoals- 3/32 brown or black. Also, I was told to throw some big woolies in those heavy riffles and did with alittle sucess... but I didn't give it a fair try.

The braids are fun at first but I wouldn't spend alot of time there. Those fish get hammered all season. Fishing in the bigger water is will be more productive... esp throwing small dries if there's a hatch. That's where I had the most fun- just below the Texas Hole, below the boat ramp.

The people at Abe's will steer you right.

Fished San Juan for about three days last week. I didn't catch alot of fish, usually about 6 per day, but those guys were healthy. They indeed have small heads with big shoulders and will let you know it on the end of your line. You can't wrap your hands all the way around an 18" fish. San Juan worms, small midges, scuds, wooly buggers, and leeches all caught fish. Scenery was awesome. We stayed at Abe's, great Mexican food. I will probably go again someday.

Glad you had a good trip and maybe I'll get out there sometime myself...
