stinger160 Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 I finally got a chance at some carp on Monday. Went to a shallow area, saw three or four and was able to make a cast to several. Several were monsters, probably ten plus pounds. No takers, but lots of fun. I think the fly I was using didn't sink quick enough but the water was off color so that may have had an impact too. Will be back at it later this week.
Troutnut69 Posted June 5, 2012 Author Posted June 5, 2012 If the waters really off-colored you pretty much have to put the fly about a foot in front of them. I normally use bead-chain eyes for weight on my flys but I'm usually fishing less than 2 feet of water. You want the fly to sink fairly quick but not make a big splashdown on the cast.
Wayne SW/MO Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 I've been combing the internet looking at carp flies. Those that have some wide popularity seem to share some ideas. Bead chain eyes, short tails and wings, or none. Colors seem to lean toward olive, tan, orange and yellow. It does appear that a person wouldn't be undergunned tieing something on a 3906B or similar hook with a short stubby squirrel tail, a dubbed body and a wing of squirrel or a hen collar. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
