Made my annual post holiday trip to Bennett with my dad. Water was down for that time of year. My normal honey holes were low and empty so I fished the "general spots" that everyone did. My hot flies were a flashback pheasant tail, white mini jig, and zebra midge. Those were successful through out zone 1. Late in the evening, I had luck with dries right up against the rocks at the spring. Finally, in zone one please run a few drifts from the bank before entering the water. Most of my best fish including the best overall were from the bank out to 15 feet. A couple of mornings there was a huge black midge hatch. I didn't even try to fish it because there was so many at the spring.

Later,

MIC

Hey Ruthead,

I didn't catch a ton, but try a big dry fly dropper combo in the morning. I got some nice takes on foam grasshoppers and stimulators the first twenty minutes each morning. After that nothing. 90 percent of the morning takes where on the dropper, but it is fun watching them attack those big flies.

If you try the rocks in the evening, I had luck with caddis, BWO, and gnats. None over the other. If the pattern holds they were grouping up in the rocks eating scuds and guts. I had a super sweet take on a caddis fly where you could see him coming from a couple feet down and then went completely airborne. It was SWEET.

Yo Mic,

We'll be sure and try that. I love throwing anything dry just to see the take. Matter of fact I'm usually the only one left in the stream in the evening when the whistle blows still throwing a dry hopeing for that one last take!

Yea, I would say the average size this year was couple of inches better than most. Either I got lucky, or the stockers are a little bigger. The big one I caught off the bank probably went 16-18 inches.
