Members Fly Fishing Fantasma Posted June 13, 2012 Members Posted June 13, 2012 I am headed down this weekend with the family and have never fished the area before. I've fished mostly in the trout parks in the past. Excited to not have a siren telling me when I can fish . I am going out on the lower portion with a guide on Saturday but would like to try flyfishing the section from the dam to fall creek the other days. Any tips I should know? Is it all wadable..depending on the generation? Can you flyfish without wading in spots? What section is a good bet to start? Flies?
tippett7 Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 If there is no generation you can go by the dam. I like to us scuds, midges, and sometimes strip wooly buggers. Just look for some flow in the water, and you should be good. You can fish a lot of place without getting in the water as well.
Andrew324 Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Excited to not have a siren telling me when I can fish . There is still a siren, although it doesn't mean you must stop fishing, but for most fisherman it does LOL. Members Fly Fishing Fantasma Posted June 13, 2012 Author Members Posted June 13, 2012 Ha! You can fish for about 5 min then watch out right! So any generation at all will make it hard to fish without a boat? Thanks for the input.
Lancer09 Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Yes, if you hear that siren go off, or notice the water level go up, HAUL it on out of there. When they start pushing water through it gets real dangerous real fast. If they forget the horn and teh water is going off, and you'd have to cross deep water to get the parking lot, just get to the other side and wait it out. I know it sucks but it's a lot safer. Check the thread down in the white river section for tips and staying safe with the generation. Scuds and midges are the ticket if you'll be fishing during the day time.
Members Fly Fishing Fantasma Posted June 14, 2012 Author Members Posted June 14, 2012 Thanks Lancer thats good to know. I've checked the generation schedule and it doesn't look like they are going to be running much. What about night fishing? I've never done that always having fished at trout parks before and want to try. I've heard woolyburgers at night? I'll also check out the water before dark to see where I'm going.
Lancer09 Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Fish it in the day before you do at dark. Any small streamers really will work. Woolybuggers, leeches etc. I like to swing 'em. Some like to strip 'em. I've also caught a lot of fish Highsticking the outlets. Make sure you have a headlamp, and be ready for some smashing hits.
Members Fly Fishing Fantasma Posted June 14, 2012 Author Members Posted June 14, 2012 Sweet...sounds exciting! What do you mean by "highsticking"?
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted June 14, 2012 Root Admin Posted June 14, 2012 There's quite a few articles here on OA on fishing Taneycomo - especially fly fishing. Also, recent reports hold true for quite some time... in other words what works today will work in July. Some flies are added and some taken away from the hot list but techniques and staple flies are the same year round. http://www.ozarkanglers.com/lake-taneycomo/
Members Fly Fishing Fantasma Posted June 14, 2012 Author Members Posted June 14, 2012 Thanks Phil! Look forward to stopping by your fly shop. You guys were full so I'm staying next door.
