rps Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Absolutely perfect morning. There was a bit of a chill and a hint of fog early. I did not see another boat in the first 40 minutes and that one was the only one for another hour. Only thing is - the bass didn't want to hit top water baits. I caught six, but all of them would fit in a quart milk carton together. Only other thing is - keeper bass were really hungry on the places I chose to fish harnesses for walleye. I suspect a jig and trailer fished on gnarly drop offs in 23 to 28 feet of water would be bitten. I fished down to Big M and had one 23 inch walleye to show for my effort. It gobbled a harness in 29 feet of water near a drop off.
Jacob W Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Rps, do you think its about that time the fish start slowing down on the Topwater bite?
rps Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 I think this year is way different. At this time last year, the top water bite was just starting. I think the 60 fish days are done. I believe will will have the occasional good day here and there - all weather based. I also think I will keep a rod armed for those white/black shad attacks that happen all summer.
Jacob W Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I noticed once the shade spawn died down alittle, my Topwater bite slowed down as well.
Bill Babler Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 I never really had them going all year. My bite is a bit different in that I'm not after the chasers as much. Like to bring those fish out of deep trees bluffends or cove mouths. Did not really happen for me this year. Kind of the same thing as the float-n-fly. Never worked. Topwater fish I have had this year are a 3 yr. old class that is fisty, but not much bigger than the fin. Had a couple of days decent. Instead of pursuing this bite I have switched to the deep crank and swimbait bite and am doing pretty well catching bigger fish in the first magic 2 hour window. Pretty similar locations, but down. Might give it a try and see what you all can come up with. I Know its hard to put that topwater bait down, but you might get a suprise with a big one. Good buddy Eric Olliverson that won the Central on Saturday, had 2 over 5 and another over 4 on a DD22 early the other morning. Not so funny, they all jumped off so he had to catch some of their buddys later in the day. That big crank may get you a big bite first thing. Try it. Good Luck http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
kwall Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Rps, I love to walleye fish, I've never tried T for'em -- do you do good there ?
rps Posted June 16, 2012 Author Posted June 16, 2012 Rps, I love to walleye fish, I've never tried T for'em -- do you do good there ? Yes, I catch walleye. Sometimes, very large walleye. But TR does not support many hundreds of thousands of 14 inch "eaters." You have to work at it.

Good Luck @ Bill: I dropped by Hook, Line, and Sinker and picked up some DD22's and one same size Fat Free Shad. I will crank the edges of the flats I have been fishing. I might as well try the method. Are you sticking the rod down in the water to get extra depth?
