stlfisher Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Well this year has been very busy so last Saturday was my first trip to the Current since February. It had certainly been too long since I had done any trout fishing. It tuned out to be a great numbers day with some quality rainbows and a 4 brown's caught. There are a lot of rainbows from the park down to Baptist. The brown's were on the smaller side most likely from last years stock as they were all about 12 inches. I hooked several rainbows in the 18inch range. My buddy landed a brown in the 3 lb range. Overall this was the best numbers day I have ever had on the Current. I 'd say I was pushing 40-50 fish by days end. The vast majority of them came during the early morining hours and especially during the late evening. Early morning was pretty good for dries, but they needed to be small. The 4 brown's I caught came during the late morning and I caught them on a Caddis. The rest of the morning fish came on various small dries. The evening bite came on a few streamers and various nymph's, but the rainbow's went crazy for the eggs. I felt a little dirty fishing them, but the fish went crazy for them. I'd say I had a hit on every cast for at least an hour before dusk. There was no dry fly action that I could muster at dusk...that was a bit of a dissapointment after the morning bite. The highlight of the day was watching a giant doe (maybe pregnant, but I know next to nothing about deer) eat grass out of the bottom of the stream above Tan Vat. She must have ate and drank for about an hour. Didn't show too much fear of us as we fished our way down to within about 15 yards. As we got close I guess lunch caught up with her and she proceeded to look right at us, drop her butt into the stream, and relieve herself. Probably had to have been there, but it was funny as hell. All in all we had a great trip and I was exhausted by days end. We left home around 3am and didn't return until about midnight. I tried out a new route and MO-32 at night is not fun to drive....not sure I will do that drive at night again after a long day of fishing.
