Gatorjet
I mean looooower! From the confluence with the Missouri River up to Held's Island, or above. The only time I've been on that part of the Gasconade has been for the Gatorboats poker run. What type of fishing can be found there at other times. I di see people tied up along the bank fishing at times. I assume catfish, rough fish, maybe goggle-eye are present in that part of the river. Members walkeg
I grew up down that way. Good fishing for catfish, goggle-eye, drum and a few largemouth and even a walleye now and then. We always caught fish. I have a picture of my dad after catching 40 fish on trotlines one night just below Fredricksburg. Proud man! Obviously caught a rise in the river! Have floated the entire Gasconade over a 7 year period and caught fish every day on the trips. I do prefer the upper Gasconade these days for the smallmouth fishing. Nothing wrong however with the lower side though!
Seth
There's some really nice bass around Helds Island that we've seen in the fall/winter while gigging but I've never bass fished that area. The only type of fishing I've done from Helds Island down to the Missouri is for catfishing. Never have caught anything big, just some small flatheads and channels. I heard the gator boat run wasn't as busy this year due to the water being so low. There's a shriners poker run out of Rollins Ferry this weekend and I imagine a lot of folks won't participate due to the low water. It's getting rough on the Gasconade. The bass tournaments I've fished on it this summer have tested my boat driving skills pretty well and I've had one close call with beaching the boat but shut it down soon enough and nothing bad happened. Gatorjet
I haven't heard the totals from Randy, but it sure looked like as many, if not more boats. It was low alright. that coupled with apower trim stuck all the way up affecting my steering responce put me on a shallow shoal when I missed a tight turn around a blind corner. A half hour of digging, and pushing, and we were on our way. Such is jet boating! Real men go propless!
Seth
Well that's good to hear. I was just going by what my buddies told me about the numbers. The Shriners run only had about 20 boats and there two wrecks but neither was that serious. The one boat had trouble with the forward and reverse afterwards but they were able to get it going again with some tools and a few hours messing around. Are you going on the Troutt and Sons Boating for Buddies poker run on August 11? It starts just above Indian Ford campground by Vienna and stops at Cow"poop" Island just down from the Belle Chutes access.
Gatorjet
Probably not. Got some health issues that the doc might be working on around then, and don't know what the recovery time will be. What's the river like in that area?. I know there was a good stretch where the races used to be held, but I heard even with normal levels it gets pretty tricky up there. Real men go propless! Members crappiepro
lower gasconade used to be great for bass, crappie, and hog walleye and sauger. Once in about '92 3 of us caught over 80 walleye/sauger in 1 day (admitteldy half were "cigar size" but did catch 5 walleye over 5 pounds (biggest 8.5) and probably 20 sauger over 3 pounds. many. many limits of walleye and sauger back in early to mid 90's. But everything I hear now is that is just overrun with asian carp. When missouri was up, it was nothing to go up first or second creek and get a limit of 13-15" crappie. Seth
Dad and I went down to Gasconade City last year in early march on warm day and caught a pile of crappie and bass just dipping the brush piles along the mud banks. I think we only had 7 or 8 crappie worth keeping but it was a fun day to just catch a bunch of fish anyways. They are snagging a few paddlefish and a bunch of carp near the Missouri right now I've heard.
Members Polar Bear
Can anyone tell me a good access point to launch my 18X56 Blazer/115 Merc to fish the Gasconade for bass? I'm unfamiliar with the river and would like to begin fishing it. I don't want to put my boat at risk trying to run too shallow. Thanks
Seth
Which species are you wanting to catch? You will have to contend with shallow water everywhere you go minus the few miles near the MO River. The bass fishing get's a lot better the farther up the river you go. Catfishing is good on the lower stretches closer to the MO River.
