flyrodman Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Today I caught my first Smallie today. Even though it was small it fought pretty hard. In the second picture there are black dots on its stomach. Are these parasites? Tight Lines! ~Luke Luke Walz
Arofishing Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Congrats! You sound like me a year ago (if you went back on the forum and looked at posts from last summer you'd see). Not sure about the dots. Best
TSmith Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Iv noticed these black spots on their bellies as well. I read an article that talk about black spots that occur on the fins and it was parasitic. However, Iv caught around 30 that have had these black spots on their underbellies. However, not all smallies have these dots. I believe that fishing is usually better when there is a full moon. People are more crazy when there is a full moon. Thank God He made fish the way He did so I can have better fishing when people are crazier than normal.
Al Agnew Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 No, those are just little oddities of their coloration. The black spot parasites are pinhead size and smaller, and can often be seen in the fins and around the inside of the mouth, but are mostly found in the meat of the fish. In a badly infested fish, they look like the meat has been sprinkled with black pepper. Congrats on your first one. I can still remember my first smallmouth, and that was over 50 years ago!
Feathers and Fins Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Very big congrats I will always remember my first one and cherish all 10 inches of spunk it had in that little body. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Members LetsGoToTheRiver Posted June 25, 2012 Members Posted June 25, 2012 Congratulations! I hope it is the first of many.
Wayne SW/MO Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Good for you, but I must warn you it can be very addictive. The spots are, as others pointed out, just part of the coloration of many smallies. The parasite don't seem to effect them. In fact many many decades ago I got chance to fish the Kennebec river in Maine and all the smallies were obviously infested with worms. The smallies grew big in there then because no one kept them. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
RSBreth Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Careful - you'll wind up as Smallie crazed as some of us are.
Justin Spencer Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 My first was short and fat, but still remember it like it was yesterday, can't remember my first smallmouth though. TSmith Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 There should be a club SA (stands for Smallies Anonymous) "Hi my name is Travis" "HI TRAVIS!" "Iv been a smallie addict for _____ yrs" I believe that fishing is usually better when there is a full moon. People are more crazy when there is a full moon. Thank God He made fish the way He did so I can have better fishing when people are crazier than normal.
