A buddy of mines goes to the lake with his boat but keeps the motor raised and takes the fuel tank out of his boat and jsut uses a trolling motor but i have seen others on the lake that use 9 and 15 hp so i dunno.

Kayakers and canoers, yes can go to streams and rivers, but like your problem those are an hour drive away. If you really want to spend that much time on the water with your son and it is too far away to drive anywhere else you can always get a different boat. Thats what I had to do, sold t the 25hp and bought a 6hp. There are very safe and sturdy boats out there for equal or less price than just a good 35hp motor.

Bassmaster is right, here is what i did, wich i know isnt the best idea for everyone, but i have my bass boat with a 65 hp for big lakes, but i bought an old richline, then i bought a couple of old motors, a 5.5 to put on it so i can go to springfield lake, and a 10 hp i can put on it if i want to take it to fellows or anywhere else, would like to have a bigger motor for fellows but i bought them together from a buddy of mine. Again i know having two boats isnt the best solution for eveyone, but one alluminum boat with two motors isnt to bad, really pretty easyto change the motors out, only takes me about 10 mins by the time i carry them back and, forth to the shed
