yaknar Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 New Rule. We can no longer call it floating until the drought ends. I had a great day on the river Friday. I told my wife I caught so many fish I should of had two fishing license. My thumb was sore from lifting up all the fish....OK now for my report. My first fish was a nice catfish, caught two for the day. I just started with the right lures and didn't need to waste time trying to find out what they wanted, although with the water this low my lures are limited. Since the water not flowing I was wondering about the e coli levels and how to find out what they were, hadn't heard anything on the news. I found them at Springfield Health Dept http://health.spring...218&PREVIEW=YES and Stone County Public Health Dept page. I dragged by Wilson creek and there was a big log jam there, although it could have been there for years. I had no problem getting around it. I was surprised when I pulled out the crappie and then another cat. It also seems like there is way more leaf litter on the river then normal. Released them all, "It Takes A Long Time To Grow A Big Smallmouth", took pictures of the ones that wanted their pictures taken and didn't get off, had the camera ready so they weren't out too long. Just a great day on the James.
Members Osage Posted July 28, 2012 Members Posted July 28, 2012 Nice fish Yaknar. Curious, if you floated by the mouth of Wilson where did you put in at? Or did you put at Delaware, paddle up and then float back down?
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 I saw this morning that galena is at 71 cfs, very low. I would imagine the leaf litter is do to the trees dropping a lot of leaves, they are here, and no water to flush them. What did you use the kayak for? Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
yaknar Posted July 30, 2012 Author Posted July 30, 2012 Osage, I was thinking about putting in on Wilson Creek and dragging down to Delaware, Has anyone ever floated down Wilson Creek?, since I never been down Wilson Creek but decided to put in under the Nelson Mill Bridge. And I came across this tree on the way down. I use my kayak to carry my extra rod.

Wouldn't be that bad with a kayak though. I use to run that area by Wilson's when I was a kid, hunting and what not. It was nasty back then. I don't want to wade Wilson's Creek, even now after they've cleaned it up some. You have about a mile from the low water bridge on the south edge of the battlegrounds on down to James. If James is low, Wilson's will be lower. Take some peroxide with you.
Members Osage Posted August 5, 2012 Members Posted August 5, 2012 Just came back from Springfield over Nelson's Bridge. That's pitiful skinny water. Yaknar, I think you'd have been better off pedaling a bicycle through there than trying to float a kayak down. I feel bad for the fish that have to live in it.
Kee sims Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 I live like half mile from Nelson bridge and drive over everyday it's extremly low and had thought about drifting down and fishing. I think I'll wait as low as it is! That and the last 3 days you can't get to the bridge they are Doug some kind of work on the bridge.
