am4mu Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 Hi, My name is Doug Kiefer. I live in Independence, Mo. I have been a bass fisherman all my life, but since my father has retired in Mtn. Home Ark. I have become fascinated with fly fishing. Going 70 mph in a bass boat no longer excites me at age 49(even though I own a Panterra 2). I have been to Lilleys several times this year and just loved it. As a matter of fact I just purchased my first fly rod about a week ago. Don't worry I will not be bothering you guys that know what you are doing for a while, I intend to learn the art of casting on local ponds and lakes fishing for bluegill. In the meantime I will not have much to say on this forum, But believe me I will read everything I hear from you guys in an effort to learn. I will be returning to Lilley's often as I now consider it a home away from home. My plan, ponds, then trout parks, Taneycomo with a fly rod, then ultimately I would like to be qualified to fish the White below Bull shoals dam and below Norfork Dam. I also would like to attend some fly fishing schools(any ideas-Orvis at gastons-Dave Whitlock at Midway,Ark. etc. Thank you and may God bless you all. Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted October 18, 2006 Root Admin Posted October 18, 2006 Nice to see you on the board, Doug. You'll like your new hobby... just let us know if you need any help.
Terry Beeson Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 Before you get in too many bad habits (speaking from experience here...) Get some casting lessons from an instructor... specifically a certified casting instructor (or equivalent.) You will be shocked how much difference it will make..... Dave and Emily have moved back to Oklahoma... Is the school still going? OH... and welcome to the forum... Mark Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 Welcome Doug. Good luck with your new hobby!! In my humble opinion, skip the trout parks unless you don't mind crowds, fishing side by side with hundreds, etc. I call them the Six Flags for fishing. Sure you catch fish, you can hear them dumping them at night from inside your tent. You may as well be fishing in a 55 gallon barrel. Get out on one of the many Ozark streams, even just outside the trout parks. The quiet solitude of fishing a stream all by yourself is priceless, even if the fish aren't biting. You will learn some on your own, and then start to ask questions.
Terry Beeson Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 I call them the Six Flags for fishing. EXcellent description, Mark... At least that was my impression of Bennett Springs on a Saturday... Didn't even bother to take my rod out of the car... That ain't fishin'...
