Members pruett417 Posted September 30, 2012 Members Posted September 30, 2012 Was down at Crane Friday of last week and as you can see by the photo, it's a mess. At least in the park area, very little water and litter strewn everywhere. I understand the low water with the record drought we had this summer but the garbage was the worst I've ever seen it. I really think it's time for the MCD to step and do more to protect this stream, obviously our neighbors in the area just can't get it done. I'm not stepping on toes or trying to disrepectful but it's pretty darn obvious. Good news is the lower stream is in relatively good shape and actually pretty healthy, seen lots of fish. I've heard the upper stream is also in good shape but haven't actually seen it first hand. An expert is a person who has made every possible mistake in a small field of study.
Members rayfromcrane Posted September 30, 2012 Members Posted September 30, 2012 417 I do not think that is from people fishing. I see lots of people in the park some of them are slobs . Will talk to the spg club about cleaning it up also the city c. I know some of them and they want to keep the city nice. From what I was told by a cd person they want to keep it natural .What the stream looks like now and 30 years ago is two differnt things. rfc

I was actually sick to my stomach when I walked along the stream in the park area the other day, and I agree that probably 99% of the junk around there is from folks that are utilizing the park. The one thing that I did notice down on the lower end is a few more bobbers hung up in trees, I always pay attention to little stuff like that. I personally think that while most of us stay out during the hot, low water, summer months, that those fish are hammered from the unethical few that don't care what having a stream like Crane means. Ray please keep me posted on any clean up days, I go to school full time and work full time but I can always find time to lend a hand! Members Bamboozle Posted October 2, 2012 Members Posted October 2, 2012 There's usually a big clean up on Super Bowl Sunday. This in fact is where I met Ray! Last year we pulled out maybe 15-20 tires and oodles of smaller litter from the property MDC bought. And the thing is anything you pick up in the park is a piece of trash that won't eventually flow down to Lower Wire Road. So it's preventative clean up.
Aaron J Scott Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 Yeah, I poked around the new MDC property by the ballfields a month or so ago and it was low, slow, and pretty littered. The lower access looked pretty good aside from the remnants of a clam bake by the parking lot. Weird. Save Scratch, Raise Cash. Fish Itch!
Harps Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I have picked up truckloads of trash at Crane Creek. Mostly at the accesses, but I will almost alway stuff the back pouch of my vest with trash when fishing. I love walking around anyone I see hanging out at the accesses and picking up trash to set an example for them. It blows my mind how people can't recognize the jewel they have in their backyard in that area. Once, back in the early '70's I believe, a local property owner took some toxic waste, plating chemicals I think, from plant in Republic and poured them on his property above the upper springs of Crane Creek. There are two springs on the old Leake property and this waste ended up in the aquifer of the upstream spring. The two branches came together in front of the Leake home and you could see the difference in the two qualities of water when I first visited with Mrs. Leake around 1986 or 87. This really shocked the fauna of the creek and affected the upper several miles of the stream badly well into the 80's. I used to have several articles on this event but have lost track of them. Forgive me if a detail or two on this is inaccurate, but you get the picture.
Members rayfromcrane Posted October 3, 2012 Members Posted October 3, 2012 Harps I heard about the toxie waste to, but could not find out where the dump site was. That is some thing people around here do not talk about. At least to me. New Dorthy when she was in her 90s what a women, very sharp. rfc
Jack Jones Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 That toxic waste spillage would explain a lot........................... Seriously, it is sad how poorly some people treat the resources in their own back yard.
