Members SoonerTrout Posted October 22, 2012 Members Posted October 22, 2012 Hello everyone. I'm new to the area and looking for info on access and floating the LIR. First, what would be considered a minimum flow for floating from the dam to the ramp outside Gore. I'm lucky enough to have a raft and driftboat, so either could be used. Also, what about wading the river. I've done some research on wade access points but was wondering if there are any areas from the dam done to the hwy bridge that are private or where wading is restricted. Thanks in advance. Members joshuapaul Posted October 23, 2012 Members Posted October 23, 2012 Hey Ryan, Welcome to the area. Thats a great question, but I don't know the answer. I've fished the LIR quite a bit, but I hesitate to offer up an answer since I haven't floated the entire section you mentioned. I've waded a good portion of it. I'm taking my kayak over in November to float from the lower gravel dam parking lot to Marval. I plan on stopping to wade quite a bit. I have a Native Ultimate Angler that floats in a few inches and it's light enough to portage if I need to. I think it should be fine in any generation scenario. With 2 units online, it wouldn't be as fun. Unless you like fishing streamers. Hoping someone else that has done it will weight in on this one. to life! Josh www.towindward.tumblr.com OKC, OK
Members SoonerTrout Posted October 24, 2012 Author Members Posted October 24, 2012 Thanks for the reply Josh. The raft only requires a couple inches and the boat not much more, and the raft is light and easy to portage. I just want to make sure that I'm not going to run into a situation where the water is low enough that I have to carry the raft WAY down river at low CFS and that there is not a spot on the river off limits to wading due to private property. on an indefinite search for the next challege with a fly rod.... Members joshuapaul Posted October 24, 2012 Members Posted October 24, 2012 Far as I know, the gravel company owns a good portion of that middle area between Watts and Marval. At one point in the past they allowed public access through their facility, but don't anymore. We don't have the fierce property owner spats like they do in Montana. Should be fine. to life! sean c Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 We don't have the fierce property owner spats like they do in Montana. Should be fine. Hopefully Huey Lewis doesn't buy any riverfront property in Oklahoma. Welcome Ryan glad to hear there is another driftboat owner in Oklahoma. I can't help you on the LIR but there are a few Okie driftboaters who can probably help that post on here.
Members SoonerTrout Posted October 25, 2012 Author Members Posted October 25, 2012 I get some strange looks with the clacka or raft behind the truck. Glad to hear there are some other oddballs out there. on an indefinite search for the next challege with a fly rod.... Mend!! darn It!! Mend!!
Members okiebug Posted October 25, 2012 Members Posted October 25, 2012 Never floated the LIR, but have wade fished the enire river. When the river is at no or low flow (under 200 cfs) you will need to pull your raft/drifter in a few spots, but only short distance. Fishing will be the best at these times, and you can get out and wade fish anywhere along the way. I have had limited success fishing with one gate open, but i would think it would be ideal at this time to take a drift boat down. There was a thread on here not to long ago, titled 1st drift boat trip down the LIR. At times during the summer with low generation, the river will be lined with people from the dam down to the gravel pit, wouldn't be much fun kayaking down through that. Let us know how it goes. Here is a link to the release schedulei if you haven't found it yet, they don't always follow it. http://www.swt-wc.usace.army.mil/power/hydropower.html#TENK
Members SoonerTrout Posted October 25, 2012 Author Members Posted October 25, 2012 Thanks for the reply. I'm planning on hittin the river the first weekend of Nov. I've floated the San Juan with big crowd's...we called it wader bowling. on an indefinite search for the next challege with a fly rod.... Mend!! darn It!! Mend!!
sean c Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 There was a thread on here not to long ago, titled 1st drift boat trip down the LIR. I completely missed this thread. Ryan PM okflyfisher44 since he has done it I'm sure he can help you out. He probably has ducks on the brain right now and hasn't been checking the boards.
Members FlyfishinOK Posted October 25, 2012 Members Posted October 25, 2012 I've kayaked from the gravel company down to Gore landing during low water. Be sure and check the map on the area about 1/2 mile up from Gore landing. There are several branches and I took a dead end and had to back track. I'm sure if there was flow it would've been easy to tell which way to go. I've also launched my Gheenoe & kayaks at Marvel's and paddled up stream over a mile during no/low flow conditions. We'd have to get out at some of the shoals and drag a bit but nothing to hard. After the water started picking up we'd turn around and float back down. Good way to get to areas with less fishing pressure.
