Ted Calcaterra Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 Why won't the state stock brown trout in the Eleven Point? Is it because of the hellbender??? Browns would rock in that river!
Gavin Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 That would be awesome...but dont hold your breath. The USFS rules the roost down there and I believe that they have a policy prohibiting the introduction of non-native species.

I wonder if the case can be made that it would increase the quality of the fishery and possible have a positive economic impact. That could get someones attention.
snap Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 ...wasn't but a few years ago, we had this same discussion!!! It would be nice....thinking Gavin hit the nose on the head......Feds calling the shots!!!
Brian Sloss Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 We have been down that road and lost that battle. Our previous state biologist proposed it a few times and the forest service said no, siting the hellbender. Rainbow trout are grandfathered in. We did a big petition and everything and even though the hellbender problem seems to be more kiptrid fungus related than predation, no dice. Even though hellbenders are having the same problem in non trout rivers. We would grow some of the biggest browns in the ozarks though. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
