Brian K. Shaffer Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I finally replaced my worn out Thompson I bought from Tim's Fly Shop in 1998 for $45 with this DynaKing Voyager, a used vise from the personal collection of Len Codella.. It cost me $100. The jaws and actual vise workings are the best I have used to date... and the DynaKing vise extension looks better on this setup than on the Thompson. Bottom line.. this is a great (out of production) vise that is going to do exactly what I need. Hold hooks without fail. If you are looking for a vise.. I suggest any DynaKing. I had tied on a buddies Barracuda before and never did figure out the dual hook placement jaw grooves until now.... I don't use them !! (unless you are using hooks designed to fit in the grooves by actual hook thickness and size, think bigger hooks for larger streamers and bass bugs and salt stuff) I think the Voyager II (2) is still a current model, as is the Kingfisher and maybe the Squire.. but they are all a $200 fixed head vise. I didn't want or need true rotary, and needed a C-CLAMP... so I am quite pleased with everything this vise has given me in the last 3 days of tying. tight lines, and better tying to all - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
jdmidwest Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Shoulda bought a Renzetti for a little more. Rotary is nice when you are doing some types of flies and checking out all sides of a fly. Otherwise, Dynaking uses good steel so it should last a life time. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Brian K. Shaffer Posted November 30, 2012 Author Posted November 30, 2012 I am not a Renzetti fan and do not need rotary.... I've tied on everything from the Traveler to the Master and the Presentation Renzettis but just never did fall in love with them. To each his own... and like you said - look at the heavy duty tool steel behemoth... Jason R. Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I started on a rotary and now I can't stand a fixed. Cool looking vise though. http://flyinthesouth.com/
ruthead Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Cool!! Now you can tie us up a bunch of flys for our next trip down there! "Pretty soon we may not have any rights left because it might infringe on someone's rights"
Brian K. Shaffer Posted December 1, 2012 Author Posted December 1, 2012 I do like those Peak vises... I am sure someday I will own one. Such a sexy design... Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
flyrodman Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 I am about to upgrade my Regal knock off to a Dyna King Trekker. The Dyna King vises look like they are built like tanks! Luke Walz
Members Pflugradt Posted December 2, 2012 Members Posted December 2, 2012 HMH all the way. I've had Dynas, 2 Renzettis, played with a regal for a while, and even had a chance to try a nor-vise for a few months. Bouth a used HMH for my wife about 4 yrs ago and she hasn't tied on it yet. She got both my renzettis in trade. Steve Check out my warm water flytying and flyfishing how to.
Brian K. Shaffer Posted December 2, 2012 Author Posted December 2, 2012 HMH vises are sweet.... I had one of the very early ones made pass thru my hands years ago... it was serial number 83. Early ones like that now fetch into 4 digit category. (by the way, HMH stands for Hunter Mad House... named after Bill Hunters mad house of fly tiers.) story and vise pics : http://www.eflytyer.com/tools/hmh_vises.html Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
