Ok well I am fifteen years old and about to take up fly fishing. Never done this before but always wanted to. My first trip will be to mermac spring and the red ribbon area below it around christmas time. I'm looking for some tips on what to use and how to present it to the trout. Looking forward to fly fishing a lot on Christmas break!

Your best bet to catch some fish this time of year are probably egg patterns and midges in the park . Maybe a streamer of some sort if you want to try for Brown's in the red ribbon section. Normal patterns like a prince nymph, pheasant tail, hare's ear will work. Mohair leeech is good fly that will take a few fish.

You can park in Maramec Springs and just walk out the back end of the park to the red ribbon area if you want to explore a bit.

Concentrate on the first few miles below the park down to Suicide. The fishing is challenging there this time of year...especially the red ribbon secton...so don't get discouraged...just have fun and enjoy it...you'll probably have the place mostly to yourself.

Bring a dry change of clothes if it is cold out and it is your first time wading.

Justin, glad to hear you are taking up fly flishing. I spin and fly we have that in common. Like stlfisher says, the standard patterns are a good start. If the water is swift I prefer to use beadheaded flies to get them down quickly on a drift since the drift time will be decreased by the fast water. When fishing a certain spot or area, don't become discouraged and assume there is no fish there until you are absolutley 100% certain that you fished it as best as you could, making sure your technique was given your very best effort. You'll be suprised how fish just show up when you really focus. Try some 6x leader/tippet, monofilament will be easier to work with in the cold conditions. I could go on forever but above all just go have fun dude! Be sure to let us know how it goes...
