Justin92297 Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Anyone know what works best here in winter? I will fish flies and/or spinning tackle
mic Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 The only thing I've had luck with is swinging and striping woollys in parks and jigs with spinning rods outside the park. I know a lot of guys have luck with egg patterns.
Members gersus Posted December 5, 2012 Members Posted December 5, 2012 Had good luck on Thanksgiving day throwin a green jig with white tail.
Jeff Tief Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Fished Maramac the first Friday of the winter season and didn't find a lot of fish;Several lunkers were in the upper section from the cable down thru the riffles eggs and scuds work well in the broken water.Have fished Maramac since the first winter season years ago and didn't see good numbers of fish.If you get enough time, the old C-R at Montauk is normally a good place to start a fly fishing career providing there is enough water. Wife normally catches several good fish from the first hole below the hatchery water down to the first wooden bridge.
mic Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Jeff, I was there with my daughter on opening day. She was the only on of three of us to catch anything.
Justin92297 Posted December 7, 2012 Author Posted December 7, 2012 Thanks for the info guys! Can anyone tell me what part of the park exactly I should fish though? I haven't been here before and will be trying to make the most out of a one day trip. Im also going to fish the mermac river just below the park.
mic Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 All of it if you have time. I like walking down to the river and work my way back.
ciRe Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 When I fish Maramec I just go where there arn't crowds. It should be pretty empty if you go during the week. I love fishing the riffles because there isn't anyone there usually and a decent amount of fish. When you fish the river one bad drift can mess up the hole. In the park it's pretty easy though.
sms_alum Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Made a trip down this past saturday. Did pretty well in the park stripping wooleys and drifting glow balls. My dad, who does not fly fish, was nailing them on a single hook rooster tail. The trout are definately stacked up in certain spots. Took a spinning rod down below the park to try for some smallmouth. Caught 3 smallmouth and a largemouth on a jerkbait, but no real size to them. There was only one other car in the lot at 8:00 when fishing started and when we left around noon there was still only about 10 cars in the whole place. If you have someone learning how to fly fish this is great time to take them down.

I'm afraid I won't have enough time to fish the whole park and then down into the meramec so Iv been trying to find specific places to fish in the park. Thanks!
