I have been wanting to get a couple reels to troll for walleye and crappie and would like to have them with line counters. Does anybody have any recommendations? The reels I have looked at are larger reels that I dont really want or need the line capacity. I was also wondering if I would be as well off with the simple clamp on counters? Any info would be appreciated.

I did the linecounter routine. I found Sealines the best value. However, I have gone a different direction. I now use 10# Power Pro Depthunter on a small regular levelwind reel. The line has four colors per 100 feet and the diameter of 2#.

I have four of Cabelas linecounter's and have caught many fish trolling with them the last three years. I bought trolling rod/reel combos. The positives with the reels are they do not require a huge investment to get started trolling. Negatives, you have to watch the counter on one of my reels as it doesn't always count when letting out line. I have heard complaints from many about the drag system on these reels, but I have not had any problems. They are currently on sale in the Cabelas bargain cave. The size 15 reels are the smallest if your not wanting to use lead core line, still a pretty big reel, though. They are far from the best line counter reels, but they have worked fine for me.

I think RPs has the best solution. The only small line-counter I know of is/was the Abu Garcia 5500 that may no longer be on the market. I have several I've used in the salt, and the best of the lot was the Shimano Tekota in 300 size. But its overkill for what you're doing.
