Brian Sloss Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Got out in the drift boat with my friend/business partner Ryan Griffin and fished the blue ribbon area. The water is still very low and clear, but we caught good looking rainbows regularly all day. The upper half fished the best, but there were a few holes on the lower half that produced pretty well. There were a number of spawning redds on the lower end at the head of some of the shoals and a few on the upper end. Only a couple of fish on any of them, which means they were mostly done spawning. Fishing egg patterns in the shoals downstream from the redds was productive. Marabou Jigs under an indicator were very effective. Tried out the Zig Jig (on the rec. of a regular fisherman down here) on the fly rod as well and it was effective in some of the slower sections jigging it up and down. Biggest fish of the day was maybe 16 inches, but man were they pretty and colored up. Guys the trout fishing is still good even with the low water. You might not be able to catch record numbers now, but you can consistently catch fish in most of the likely looking spots. Saw more eagles than people, it was a great day. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497

LittleRedFisherman Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Great Report Brian, and Happy Birthday!! I've got to float that stretch with you in the Walt one of these days. Glad the Zig Jigs worked out for ya. Would like to make it back up there sometime this week, if I do I'll holler at ya, might need somebody to go with me..... Ditto on the pretty trout right now, in all my years of trout fishing, those are by far, the prettiest colored trout I've ever caught. Must be the crystal clear water we've had for so long now? There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!
mic Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Nice report Brian. What color jigs were working?
Brian Sloss Posted December 10, 2012 Author Posted December 10, 2012 Ginger/white, ginger/orange, olive, olive/yellow, white/grey and I am sure a few others that we did not try. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
Members flyfisherman Posted December 10, 2012 Members Posted December 10, 2012 Nice report Brian. It was good seeing you a couple weeks ago, hope thanksgiving in the Ozarks went well. Your suggestion for where to fish was spot on, had a blast stripping buggers where I would never thought there be trout. In some cases even saw the take had a great time. Sounds like I need to bring the swamp donkey down there before end of the year.
mic Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Sorry Brian, I'm still learning the lingo... Are those head/feather colors...or...feather colors on top/bottom.
Brian Sloss Posted December 10, 2012 Author Posted December 10, 2012 Mic, Please rephrase, not sure how to answer. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
Guest Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 There is a color chart on this page http://www.zigjig.net/index.php?act=viewDoc&docId=6
mic Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Brian, sorry should have phrased it better. For example: Ginger/white... Are you saying the feathers were Ginger and the jig head was white? Or where the feathers a mix of ginger and white.
