Guest Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 I'm in the planning stages of a smallmouth vacation in late July. (dog days of summer) My wife and I want to spend 4 days and 3 nights at a world class smallmouth fishery in the central northern U.S. Im leaning towards Minnesota bc a friend recommended it. I need to research guides, outfitters, lodges, etc. We need to book our flight, rental car, guide, lodge, etc ASAP The great lakes are off limits bc my wife gets sea sick real easy. We found this out the hard way at Green Bay in 2008. Could ya'll share your experiences up north? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Guest Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Are you looking for lakes or rivers? Powerboats or paddlecraft?
kjackson Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Lake Mille Lacs in Minnesota has some outstanding smallies, and they are largely ignored because up there it's walleyes and crappie.

Guest Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Lake Mille Lacs in Minnesota has some outstanding smallies, and they are largely ignored because up there it's walleyes and crappie. Lake Mille Lacs was one of the place that my buddy suggested. I had no clue its 130,000+ acres. We might look for river sytems to fish, maybe the Mississippi.
kjackson Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 I've had one trip on the upper Mississippi in the Elk River area. The fishing was OK but not spectacular. However, my friend, who set up the trip, has had days when it was four-pounders on buzzbaits all day. If he''s still guiding, Steve Dezurik (add a dot com to get his website) does some good, light-tackle stuff on both the Mississippi and Mille Lacs. Mille Lacs is unbelievably huge, and it has a number of guides, lodges and accommodations. I was up there ice fishing one time when the FW did a flyover and counted something on the order of 25,000 ice houses on the lake. And yet, the fishing is still good. I haven't fished the river up there in maybe 10 years, so I don't know if it is still as good. However, I was on Mille Lacs the year before last and the year before that, and it was, and I'm sure still is, very good.
Guest Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 "Mississippi in the Elk River" is the area I was told to check out. I couldnt remember the name, so thanks for sharing that info. He said they swim jigs and average 30- 3# smallies per day. The light tackle stuff I really like bc my wife is a spinning rod gal.
