Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted November 9, 2006 Root Admin Posted November 9, 2006 Rolan and I met Leonard at #2 outlet at 9:30 pm last night for some fishin'. Leonard first showed me how to dead drift using a night glow stick indicator in the outlet floom. He used a 2-egg rig, the first egg weighted quit a bit and the second egg not. The second egg was dark red and caught all the fish- mostly rainbows- medimum size. He kept shining his light on the area to see where any browns were lying - there was one about 25 inches. I could see him in the bright moon light with no help... but he didn't bite. We headed up to the #1 area to start stripping woolies and leaches cause there were alot of people down from #2. Rolan caught 2-3 small browns on a white wooly. I had a couple of strikes and Leonard had the same. Water seemed to be lower than usual by a few inches which up there is alot. After an hour covering the area down to #2 outlet, we walked down to rebar. We had the place pretty much to ourselves by then. Met Rick Osborne from Camdenton- the present Missouri record holder for brown trout. He was fishing the outlet at #2. At rebar, Leonard used his white bunny sculpin and drifted thru the browns holding at the top of the run. He caught a couple small ones. I headed down a pit doing the same thing, wading the middle of the stream and throwing to each side. I hooked a big fish on the left side going down and knew immediately it was foul hooked. He ran downstream and I let him for a minute till I was convinced it was not in the mouth. Then I held the rod straight and tried to break it off. I was using 3x- the tippet held and he swung to the shallow water. Leonard went down and grabbed the fly and pulled it out of his back. He said it was 10-pounds plus. I never saw it. We went on down to the big hole where we stripped woolies and sculpin. Rolan caught 4 in a row and then things died down. He let the line swing downstream, not stripping at all- they would hit it on the swing. I tried the same thing and had a half dozen strikes but couldn't hook them. Leonard went on down and caught a couple- nothing big at all and mostly browns. I caught one rainbow on a white bunny leach while walking back upstream to leave- my only fair hooked fish of the night. Finished at 1:30 am.
Leonard Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 It's was great getting out and fishing with you and Rolan... Now for the topper of the night... No matter how well you think you know the lake... There is always a rock (or something) somewheres ready to take you off your feet... Last night was my night it jump out in front of me... "I went in"...only elbow deep.. caught myself with my hands and my knees... Yes... I did have a spare shirt in the car.. and another jacket Note: THAT WATER IS COLD!!! http://www.taneycomonights.com
Terry Beeson Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Dang, Leonard... It's about time you found that rock I moved two weeks ago three inches to the left so you'd find it.... (You sure it wasn't the squid?) Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted November 9, 2006 Author Root Admin Posted November 9, 2006 We're going again tonight but going early and not staying late. Going straight to the Big Hole and swing some leaches... we'll see. Michael- how come we haven't heard from you lately? Been fishing? Ya gotta give reports even on the bad days... like me! Course I haven't had a real good fishing trip all fall. Course I mean good catching trip... every outing is a good one.
tippet7 Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 I was up there too. I caught a couple using a white wooly nothing too big at all. I did have a HUGE hit below #2 I was using a very large leach looking thing a friend of mine from Alaska gave me. I was stripping it in and about 8 feet in front of me I got hit, I was expecting it that close and brought the rod up real fast and hard, the fish took off and broke me off. The guy I was fishing with caught all his on an olive wooly. largest was 18 inches You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.
LostMyWife Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Phil You wrote, He let the line swing downstream, not stripping at all- they would hit it on the swing. What does "hit it on the swing" mean? Yes, I'm That Guy
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted November 10, 2006 Author Root Admin Posted November 10, 2006 When you cast across current or even downstream at a 45 degree angle, the current will take your line and 'swing' it downstream. As the line/leader/fly get to the end of the swing, the fly will straighten up and stop swinging- it will be sitting there directly downstream. Alot of times, the fish will take the fly at the end of the swing... sometimes as it's swinging. It depends on the fly (what it's imitating) and/or circumstances (current speed, depth of water). A soft hackle, for instance, imitates an insect, like a midge, that, in it's larva state, is 'swimming' to the surface to hatch. A soft hackle imitates the larva as it's coming to the surface- the swing can bring the fly to the surface in a similar fashion. That's pretty technical for as late as it is... I better stop.
LostMyWife Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Late or notI get it. Micheal Kyle Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 I have not fished Taney since the Two Fly for the Y which was on the 21st of October. The day after, I left for a week and landed in Craig Mt. to fish the upper Missouri. We floated 25 miles of the river in three days. The fishing was outstanding. I would say that I caught around 45-50 fish per day a lot of them were caught on streamers and in the afternoon when the wind would die down we would dry fly fish. The biggest bow on the trip was a 22" and the biggest Brown on the trip was a 23". I got back from there on Saturday the 28. I then washed all my warm clothes and exchanged the Simms Waders out for some nice camo waders and decided that the weapon of choice should be my shotgun and headed to north Missouri to a little town known as Bigelo which is close to Mound City and duck hunted. It is now Hienz 57 time or more comonly known as catch up time. It sounds like the fishing has been really good. I was wanting to come down tonight but the girls are sick so I better go home and help the wife out. Michael To Know People Is To Know Thier Ways!
