I recently found a cool technique for spinning dubbing for the thorax on a hare's ear (probably old hat to some). Then by accident, I figured out how to convert it into a wet fly/emerger collar instead of using a hen or starling hackle. I've farted around and "think" I have a nice "wet midge" patter of thread, ribbing, and guard hairs from a hare's mask.

I'm not able to get out for a while, but I'm dying to know. If you live near trout water and/or are on the water regularly, like fishing midges or wets, and would like to try out a couple, please send me a PM with your address. All free to you, I just want some feedback. I think they will work well during a midge hatch as well as a dropper. I'm tying them on size 22s, but can make them bigger if you perfer.

Post a picture of the fly, if you can. I'm curious to see how it looks.

I'll try, but it's pretty small. It looks like a puff of hare over a zebra midge.

Don't overlook ostrich herl for the collar on midge patterns. :D

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Here is the pic. Sorry not a professional.

I see what you are trying to accomplish. It looks like you put the rabbit hairs in a dubbing loop and used that for your collar. It looks kinda thick, to me. Have you ever thought of using CDC instead? I think you could put the fibers in a dubbing loop, make one wrap and tie it off. Or, you could just tie the feather in and wrap it. Then pull all of the CDC fibers forward, over the bead head and give them a snip. I think the bead might override the floating characteristics of the CDC.

Either way, I bet a trout would still inhale that pattern. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Nice looking fly, but not what i think of when you said midge, hence my ostrich herl collar remark.

That is more in my soft hackle category and they can be deadly at times swung in the current.

Your right, but it is on a size 22 hook. Thus the midge name.
