LostMyWife Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 I have spent the past week printing and reading as many articles on this site as I can. What I am finding is that I still have more questions than answers. My wife and I are coming back to Taney for Thanksgiving. It is our desire to catch fish. In order to do that I need to get educated. I am looking for suggestions on some instructional DVD's that will teach me some the basics so that I can ask intelligent questions and understand what the answers are. We plan on hiring a guide next time out. My wife feels very comfortable, (something very important to her), with Carolyn at River Run, but I am not sure if she is availale. Anyway, our goal in doing this is not just to catch fish, but learn why we are catching them. I hope a few DVD's will help. Any suggestions? Yes, I'm That Guy
Kansas Fly Fisher Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 LMW - the one that I really like and keep handy for some touch up lessons is from Cabela's. It's "The New Fly Fishing Basics." It covers Basic casting techniques, knots, equipment, basic fly tying, basic fishing techniques and advanced techniques. I keep it handy for any quick reviews. I even take it fishing with me in our portable DVD. I believe the cost was around $20 - 25. Hope this helps. John Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM

Members AZ_Trout Posted November 10, 2006 Members Posted November 10, 2006 LMW If you and your wife are going to So-MO to fish over Thanksgiving, I'd suggest a trip to Roaring River State Park -- or Bennett Springs State Park. It's the winter catch and release season. Less people --BIG fish. If you went to RRSP stop in at Tim's Fly Shop - Tim can point you in the right direction. Many flies will work very well. Eggs, San Juan Worms, many nymphs When we lived in Topeka - my oldest and I made it a tradition to go to RRSP every Thanksgiving. We started when he was in second grade - and by the next year he had a fly rod in hand 1st and formost. Taney's great - was just down the last of Oct - Nov 5th. Nice fish - But I really like the catch and release season. If I didn't live in AZ now I'd be there. Rod Thighlines & Singing Reels
LostMyWife Posted November 10, 2006 Author Posted November 10, 2006 We already have lodging in Branson. How far is Roaring River? Yes, I'm That Guy
Members AZ_Trout Posted November 10, 2006 Members Posted November 10, 2006 about 1+ hour to the west,Hwy 65 south to Hwy 86 to Eagle Rock - Hwy F to the park. If you go this route you will pass Dogwood Canyon - you pay to fish here - but it might be a good learning location. I have never fished it, thought about fishing it, just haven't. FYI When we were in Branson the last of Oct - I drove over on Sunday to fish the afternoon. So it's not a bad drive. Thighlines & Singing Reels
Danoinark Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 LMW There is an excellent video out called "Wet Fly Ways" it features one of our pro poster's here. Davy Wotton. Davy is world reknown and is a guide on the White/Norfork Rivers, writes books and develops flys. I am sure some of the shops around Branson are stocking it. His webpage is www.davywotton.com This video helps you understand soft hackle flys and wet flys. It teaches you about presentation, where to fish them, when and how.
